Coming Soon: New Biography of the Cars

“Let The Stories Be Told,” by Bill Janovitz

Author Bill Janovitz (known for his bestselling biography of Leon Russell) has written what he targets to be the definitive book about the Cars, one of the most iconic bands of the late ’70s/early ’80s new wave scene. In “Let the Stories Be Told,” he draws his material from surviving members of the band and those in their circle. It also features a forward by Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes.

The book explores the impact of the Cars, not just musically, but culturally as well.  Often closely identified with the city of Boston, the book notes that the members of the band were, in fact, journeymen musicians, with roots across the mid-Atlantic and New England. Only after performing in a series of bands did they find each other, their sound, and their place in Boston and eventually the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Janovitz sensitively delves into the stories of each member of the band, as well as the band as a whole. While he has the cooperation of his subjects, he does not shy away from exploring conflicts within the group and the reasons for the band’s ultimate end. The band’s connection to the Boston area is explored with the help of Jonathan Richman. In addition, each of the band’s albums is chronicled in superb fashion.

For fans of the Cars, new wave aficionados, or really any music fan – put this new book on your reading list. Look for it in September.
