This is Jesse Sample. What are the characteristics that make something ugly? Why do we have the label “ugly” in our head? Does it have to do with a genetically encoded reaction to something that our ancestors encountered and that might have been dangerous? Where does this judgement come from?
Is a fresh sun-ripened Roma tomato ugly? No. Not to most people. But what about that same tomato that sits at the bottom of the fruit bowl for 2 weeks. I’d say it’s ugly. We throw it out immediately or perhaps we throw it in a compost pile in the yard. And what happens to our once beautiful Tomaté? It decomposes and contributes to a nutrient rich soil which might render another beautiful Roma tomato.
If we’re gonna eat the sausage, let’s not lie to ourselves about where it comes from. Perhaps we ought to embrace it.
