A New Supergroup Shakes Up the Capital Region

On Friday, March 28, 2025, a powerful new sound took over the stage for just the second time ever—but you’d never know it from the roar of the crowd or the chemistry in the band. Chain of Fools, an electrifying fusion of talent drawn from three beloved local acts, made their sophomore appearance at a packed Frog Alley, bringing their signature blend of classic rock, country grit, and unexpected flair. Their debut had come just a week earlier at Sharpshooters in Amsterdam, NY, but by their second gig, the band already had fans talking.

Chain of Fools is no ordinary cover band—they’re a full-on experience. The lineup reads like a “who’s who” of the local music scene. Guitar wizard Matthew Spataro brings thunder and soul with every riff, having spent years lighting up stages with Akaysha, Drama, the Penny Knight Band, and Legacy. His guitar work drew high praise recently: “Magical… his fingers dancing across the strings to create melodies that soared and shimmered.”

Lauren Ugalde (Kerr) returned to her Upstate NY roots with a vengeance, adding her powerhouse vocals and theatrical flair after a four-year rock hiatus. A classically trained vocalist with experience spanning from the Maximus Band to musical theater hits like “RENT “and “The Last Five Years,” Lauren adds a dynamic spice to the band’s already rich mix.

On vocals and country charisma, Vinny Michaels brings a fresh edge. Known for his success in the country scene—sharing stages with stars like Luke Combs and Old Dominion—Vinny now stretches his vocal muscles into rock territory. His blend of country charm and ’80s rock passion has quickly become a signature highlight of the group’s set.

Drummer Mike Porter, a seasoned rhythm machine, anchors the band with undeniable energy. With roots in groups like the Grand Design and the Shakedown, Porter is known for his adaptability and heart-pounding beats. There’s a reason he’s one of the most in-demand drummers in the Capital Region—he brings fire to every show.

Adding depth and harmony, Dan Barnum fills the stage with keyboards and vocals that replicate the originals with uncanny precision. Dan’s ability to balance faithful renditions with spontaneous flair makes him a crucial part of the band’s sound.

And last but far from least, Mike Marzullo, whose resume includes touring the East Coast with the New York Flyers and sharing stages with legends like Eddie Money and Pat Benatar, handles classic rock vocals with a voice that has only grown more powerful with time. His renditions of Foreigner and other rock staples had the crowd belting along Friday night.

From Journey to Brooks & Dunn, from rock anthems to soulful ballads, CHAIN OF FOOLS had something for everyone. The show was a celebration of collaboration, diversity in sound, and a mutual love of music that crosses genres and generations.

Catch them next on April 12th at Meadowbrook Saloon (119 Meadowbrook Rd, Glen NY) at 9 PM.
