Against The Grayne at the Glove – A Night of Grunge and Great Vibes
Words and Photography by Penny Piper.
Let me just say it: Against The Grayne is the ‘90s grunge cover band you didn’t know you needed in your life until you see them live. As a proud Gen Xer who came of age during the golden era of flannel, distortion, and angsty lyrics, their performance at the Glove Theatre on April 4 transported me straight back to 1993 in the best way possible.
These guys don’t just play the music—they embody it. Covering artists like Layne Staley and Chris Cornell is no small feat. You need nerves of steel and actual talent to pull it off, and lead singer Luke Baird has both in spades. His voice has that deep, smooth edge that makes you do a double-take, and he’s got the guts to get up there and own it. It’s not just about hitting the notes—it’s about capturing the raw emotion and energy of an era, and Luke does just that.
James Ferris shredded on lead guitar with a mix of technical skill and pure, passionate playing that left everyone wide-eyed. Zen Boudeaux complemented him with rhythm guitar that tied the whole sound together seamlessly. On drums, Todd Friedman was nothing short of phenomenal—tight, creative, and powerful. And Brandon White on bass? He was the heartbeat. His groove kept everything grounded while still letting the whole set pulse with energy.
The setlist was flawless, hitting all the essentials—from Alice In Chains to Sublime—and even throwing in a few surprises. When they busted out Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It,” the crowd absolutely lost it. Everyone was on their feet, screaming the lyrics and dancing like it was the summer of ‘95 again. That moment? Pure magic.
But what really sets Against the Grayne apart is who they are. They’re the real deal: warm, kind, hilarious, and totally engaged with the crowd. Their stage presence was as entertaining as their music. Between songs, they had us laughing, sharing stories, and feeling like we were part of the show. It’s rare to see a band that talented also be that down-to-earth—and it’s why I felt compelled to write this.
And let’s not forget the venue—the Glove Theatre. If you haven’t been, seriously… what are you doing with your life? This historic gem, opened in 1914, was nearly lost in the ‘90s. Now, it’s in the midst of a full-blown renaissance, thanks to the tireless work of volunteers and visionaries like Kathleen Perrott, president of the Board of Directors, and her husband Rico. Their 518 Concert Series is giving local talent the spotlight and bringing world-class acts into the community.
The energy in the Glove that night was electric. It wasn’t just a concert—it was a celebration. Of music, of community, and of a time when grunge ruled the airwaves. If you get the chance to see Against The Grayne live—do it. You won’t just hear the music. You’ll feel it.
