50 years ago: Roberta Flack / Blood, Sweat & Tears @ Tanglewood
The tears were provided by Roberta Flack, who opened her performance with one of her biggest and most melancholy hits, “Killing Me Softly.” Though Flack can belt out a gospel style tune, and sound a lot like Aretha Franklin, her repertoire is made up largely of sweetly sad song like “Jessie,” and Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne.”

20 years ago: John Prine / Jason Wilber @ Palace Theatre
Prine usually heads to Ireland during the summer, but he decided to stick around this year because of the success of the album. He beamed when he shared that with fans, who sang along with most of the tunes, cheered loudly after every song and shouted out requests. Prine didn’t oblige the requests, but there wasn’t any need; his song selection was stellar.

10 years ago: Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue / The Main Squeeze @ Upstate Concert Hall
And his roof-raising performance at Clifton Park’s Upstate Concert Hall last week was even more party-hearty than his sold-out show at The Egg in January, 2014, because everybody had room to dance this time around. And let’s face it, it almost impossible to remain seated at a Trombone Shorty show.
– Greg Haymes for Nippertown
