Sime Gezus a.k.a. Pete Pluto – Interview – Thanks for Asking – by Liam Sweeny.

RRX: Who are you? Not, like, philosophically, but you know, who are the members of the band, who plays what? Describe yourself in one sentence (it can be a long sentence.)

SG: Haha, in 2024 it’s all about exposure and connections and in today’s day and age it’s not even about talent anymore.  A Tik Tok clip could have somebody go viral overnight, it’s open game for an ill artist or a wack artist to blow up, it’s whatever really, but now you tend to see that more artists are paying for streams and followers and even the funny style accolades.  In this 518 area alone there is soo much talent, fire producers and dope artists it’s kind of bananas.

Awww yeah, so who am I?  Strangely, just a man who gets caught up in the mundane society of a state job and paying bills, waking up in time to not be late for work, and sometimes that’s all that I am.   However, fans remind me who I am when I hear “Yoooo Sime you killed it at the SUPERDARK show! “Yoo you’re definitely Top 5” “That was siiiick” haha,  (Sime Gezus headlined a few weeks ago with artists JB, Mundy, Aila, Shiloh, and Lu Buoy) I didn’t even get a chance to really rehearse but luckily it was one of my better shows in a while, when it was my turn to rock I was ready, we’ve been doing this for years and it’s time to not sell ourselves short, ripped it down (humbly speaking) I’m excited to release new music and really get active with out of state shows …. I had my setlist loaded up on the SP-606 and just set it off … the crowd was really live that night shout out to all the artists that performed earlier too, the whole night was pretty sick.    I am an underground hip hop emcee/producer from Upstate NY, I go by the name Sime Gezus aka Pete Pluto, I am basically a 1-man army radio host slash deejay, gritty grimey raw beat maker and song writer.

RRX: Do you have anything out right now that people can enjoy, and if so, what’s the best way for them to get it?

SG: Yes absolutely, please stream my latest project Pete Pluto – Black Jesus EP available now at loosejointscollective.bandcamp.com and it is streaming on all sites! Also the music video for DOOM DAY recently dropped, definitely check that out, it is on Youtube!

RRX: Tell me about your most recent song, album, or video (you pick.) Tell us a story about what went into making it. Not a process, but a cool story that took place within the process.

SG: Great question, Thanks for asking!  I’m more than halfway finished with my new solo album and maybe slowed down recording due to work, a little job promotion I’ve been trying to focus on and do well with and getting lost in the sauce with a slew of side projects and making new beats. Anyway, here goes the “cool story” … I was at my dude Slowpace’s place not too long ago, I had worked my regular shift then did some overtime and didn’t get a chance to eat much of anything.  We were just kicking it listening to some new underground music that dropped, dispensary herb burnin’ …. When suddenly I was getting real real dizzy and my chest was pounding, it felt like I was sliding off of the chair for forever before I slid to the floor, I thought I just had to catch my breath for a few then I’d be fine, minutes later my back seized up and I could barely move, like … it was hurting just to breathe, I’m face down on the floor like gasping for air, and didn’t even have the strength to get up, Slowpace’s cat came over to me and was nudging me, he even tried to help get me up, in my head I’m thinking “whaaaat is happening, what is wrong with me?” like 5 more minutes go by, still gasping for air, no energy and my back is spazzed up, Slow was like “should I call  911?” I was like “nahhh I should be ok man.”

Five more minutes go by, Slow said I’m gonna call an ambulance”, I said ok this time.  He went downstairs to wait for them, I tried picking myself up but couldn’t …. Then I really started thinking damn, almost panicking but thinking that I was dying … During those few minutes I was asking myself some serious questions. Whoa.  Those next 3-5 minutes before the ambulance came sparked my mind with so much material to write about and feelings to put into the music.  I’ve written about 3-4 tracks inspired by that sheer incident.  Yeah yeah kind of crazy, I could explain further at another time about what happened.

RRX: Artists, musicians, we immortalize. We set it in stone. Is there anyone who has passed that you feel you have immortalized in your work? If so, can you tell us a little about them?”

SG: Absolutely, immortalized for sure … I’d have to say Kobe, DMX, MF DOOM all have been immortalized in my work, Kobe’s just do it yourself work ethic, DMX spit that pain and was would really pray for real, I used to get chills from DMX’s prayers, and DOOM’s out of the box production, song structure / rhyme schemes etc.

RRX: You sing, you rap, you play guitar, play drums, you have no doubt struggled to learn music. Something probably tripped you up. What was it for each of you? What did you have to overcome?

SG: Yeah man, another great question, so honestly I don’t read music, or play notes on the keys or anything, truthfully I don’t play any instruments.  I just play by ear  (I’ve been toying with trying to take piano lessons for the last 20 years) I play keys and melodies that sound dope to me, I guess, but mainly I just chop samples, that’s been my go-to no doubt.

RRX: Every band has a song that they really thought was going to be popular, but it wasn’t. What was that song for you? Did you have a song become popular that you didn’t expect?

SG: Yeah I had a gambling song called Uncut Gems from the Shadow Of Death album, it’s a song that I didn’t write, it just came to me while driving … over a Lofi Samurai beat, plus I was hype from Adam Sandler’s movie Uncut Gems. That’s one of my favorite movies.  A song that became popular that I didn’t expect, I’d have to say GAS – (produced by Kappy D),  when the engineer uploaded the Wav. Somehow the file got messed up and time stretched, … like the original instrumental is waaaay different and faster … so I ended up recording  to a bugged out glitched sped up version of the real beat lol, but it came out dope luckily and it definitely was heavy in rotation with underground deejays, heads were hitting me saying “Yooo that GAS beat is Craaaaazy! “ haha, I’m still planning on dropping a music video for that.

RRX: How can people keep up with you? What’s coming up, soon or eventually?

SG: Follow @LooseJointsCollective on IG, link in bio has links to all the latest music (streaming and bandcamp) music videos and more content.  New Singles dropping soon! Also on April 6th , Backpack Mafia from Buffalo is coming to The Whiskey Pickle in Troy NY, for a Buffalo vs Albany beat battle, definitely come check that out! Follow them on IG too @backpackmafia.  More importantly, thank you RRX for reaching out for this interview, it is greatly appreciated.  Peace to any Sime Gezus fans out there, thank ya.  Health is Wealth.
