More often his (Donovan) voice was off-tune, he seemed lost on the guitar, and the audience sat back and put up with the annoyance until Judy Collins could take the stage and make things better.

50 years ago: Peter Nero @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center
“Thank God you’re here,” he said to the audience of approximately 800. The musician, accompanied by a bass guitar and drums, warmed up after a slow beginning in which everyone present was uncomfortably awar of the vast exanse of empty seats.
