For weeks, we have been perplexed by the mystery of the Turf Turds. Who makes up this unknown tribute band to the Lawn Sausages? Why would someone want to make a tribute band for the Lawn Sausages? Who was the mysterious Phil McKracken who organized all of this? We found out at Seven Bistro in Clifton Park for the reveal of the legendary Turf Turds.
Matty D. started the night off with some smooth hits to get the crowd warmed up. Tension was in the air as we waited for the Turf Turds to come out. Then the reveal … it was members of the Lawn Sausages themselves! Art Fredette, Lawn Sausage member and RadioRadioX founder, came out of the crowd and announced they would be playing the show.
The Turf Turds gave us one hell of a fun night. Several people told me they have never seen the Lawn Sausages play, but the mystery brought them out. They were treated to some of the Sausage’s greatest hits like “Wanking Away my Tears,” “Cow Tipping,” and my personal favorite “She’s Got a C*^k.” Playing for the first time in public since the Lawn Sausages’ goodbye show, The Last Schmaltz, they did not disappoint.
After the show, I caught up with Sausage member Rob Skane. Rob had set up an alt Facebook under the name Phil McKraken to keep up the ruse and promote the show.
RRX: How did the plan of making a tribute plan come about, and why keep it so mysterious?
RS: It came about because we still wanted to keep on performing, but we weren’t exactly sure who would be available to do any gigs that might come our way.
RRX: Whose idea was the tribute band?
RS: I’m certain the tribute idea was Artie’s. He comes up with great ideas for the band, and we’re all grateful for that.
RRX: Was it hard to keep the secret?
RS: I don’t know that it was much of a secret, to be honest. But we wanted to have some fun with the concept of a Lawn Sausages tribute band.
RRX: How did you come up with the idea of an online alter ego?
RS: We just thought it would be funny if there was a Sausages devotee out there who formed a tribute band. Phil McKraken.
RRX: Can we expect more from the Turf Turds in the future, or is it a one-and-done? I’m hoping for more.
RS: I hope there’s more, but I’m not sure what’s going to happen.
RRX: Where can people find out if the Turf Turds play more shows?
RS: I imagine someone would post something on social media. Otherwise, I’m not sure.
