The eighth annual CHATS Film Festival and Lecture Series is presented by UAlbany’s Center for Humanities, Arts, and the Technosciences (CHATS), The UAlbany Libraries, and The New York State Writers Institute, with help from the Writing and Critical Inquiry AI Committee, and the Alumni Association. It is an interdisciplinary, student-and community-centered public humanities program that aims to generate conversations and cultivate community relationships through a selection of culturally diverse films and lectures that expand academic discourse beyond the classroom and foster critical inquiry into real-world concerns through the arts.

Warren Miller’s “ALL TIME”, The Egg, Albany, 7:30pm

Warren Miller’s ALL TIME: Seventy-four years of filmmaking

Narrated by Jonny Moseley, ALL TIME will feature deep dives into elements that Warren himself first identified as the stuff of which snowy dreams are made.

From the birth of ski towns like Sun Valley and Aspen; to the icons and innovators—like the original hotdoggers—the film will spin through the years like snow ghosts, bringing humor and inspiration from today including Maine’s finest athlete, Donny Pelletier, to the park scene at Woodward Park City and the next gen of skiers and riders.

Less a documentary than a love letter, it’s a way to honor how, where, and with whom we’ve made ski and snowboard movies since Warren first picked up a camera in 1949.

This is not a trip down memory lane; it’s an exploration of how snow sports have burrowed into our collective consciousness as an obsession and a way of life.

Passport Series: Brooklyn Nomads, Proctors Theatre, Schenectady, 7:30pm

The Brooklyn Nomads is a cross cultural ensemble rooted in music traditions from the Arab World. The ensemble has performed at The Kennedy Center, TED, Joe’s Pub, MIT, Le Poisson Rouge, and others. Interpreting Arab folk music through cultural and musical backgrounds as diverse as Brooklyn itself, the Brooklyn Nomads put a multicultural spin on a traditional Arabic repertoire and bring it to a wide audience around the world. By sharing their innovative interpretations with a broad range of audiences, The Brooklyn Nomads foster cross cultural collaboration and appreciation through the language of music.

The event will include a world premiere ballet by Durante Verzola to music by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the first classical composer of African descent to receive widespread critical acclaim. We will also perform a piece called Letting Go To Let In by Francisco Aviña, a new solo by Princess Grace award winner Joshua Manculich and Amy Hall Garner’s Bluff City Blues.

Recently named a “Southern Cultural Treasure” by South Arts and the Ford Foundation, Collage Dance is one of the largest Black-led performing arts organizations in the South and one of a few professional ballet companies in the world with a roster of BIPOC dancers. Working to inspire the growth and diversity of ballet, Collage Dance Collective showcases a repertoire of relevant choreography and world-class dancers representative of the communities we serve. The professional company has presented thirteen full-length seasons in Memphis, plus national and international touring presenting a diverse range of classical and contemporary choreography from George Balanchine, Nacho Duato, Ulysses Dove, Joshua Manculich, Amy Hall Garner, Kevin Iega Jeff and more.

After a two year hiatus, Capital Region rock & soul faithfuls Wild Adriatic return to the stage! The band spent the better part of a decade touring the world hitting festivals, Europe, and any room that would have them. Amidst the pandemic, Wild A recorded an album but was unable to return to the road as things continued to unfold. After taking some time to regroup and fall back in love with playing music together, the original core trio of Travis Gray (guitar/vocals), Rich Derbyshire (bass/vocals) and Mateo Vosganian (drums) decided it’s time to play another hometown show. With long-time keys player Dustin Deluke and saxophonist Mike Oehmen in tow, the band is releasing new music and returning to the stage at Putnam Place for their only show of 2023. Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of 13, which began a storied career that has encompassed performance, songwriting, and teaching. Born in Boston and raised in North Carolina, he is the fourth child in a very musical family that includes Alex, James, Kate, and Hugh. Described as equal parts Mark Twain, college professor, and musical icon, Taylor has written top-40 hits recorded by his brother James and has appeared with Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, and Jimmy Buffet. Taylor maintains a performance schedule of more than a hundred shows a year, delighting audiences with his charm and vast repertoire of his 22 albums and popular classics. Hailing from Albany NY, The Jagaloons play guitar-driven, reverb-drenched, all-instrumental rock and roll. This trio takes the surf music of the 1960s and adds modern and eclectic influences, creating their own unique sound. The Jagaloons have performed all over the Northeast and down the east coast since 2015 with some big names in the surf scene like Messer Chups, Surfer Joe, The Surfrajettes and more. They have released a couple of full length albums on UK-based Sharawaji Records and a 7” with Otitis Media. In 2023, they will release a brand new LP on Missing Fink records.

The multinational trio of Tatiana Desardouin, Lauriane Ogay and Mai Lê Hô brings societal issues to light through their street dance, hip-hop, house and clubbing styles. In a program exploring the “groove,” the threesome use it as a road map to social justice through the physical expression of Black culture.

This performance takes place at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center

By Aaron Jafferis & Gihieh Lee Shakespeare the Remix  One of theREP’s most popular On-The-Go! shows, “Shakespeare the Remix” compares the power of language found in Shakespeare’s work with that of early hip-hop and slam poetry. Shayla, a hip teenage girl tackles some of the most famous characters in Shakespeare’s written works. She finds herself in a verbal battle with the Bard himself with both Elizabethan text and her modern-day slam poetry. Students will experience bits from “Hamlet,” “Macbeth,” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” “Shakespeare the Remix” is a striking mix of Shakespeare’s text with fresh, original hip-hop poetry and music.

Dana Fuchs, Cohoes Music Hall, Cohoes, 8pm

With her feet planted on both sides of the blues-rock divide, Dana Fuchs is one of the fiercest voices in modern-day roots music. She’s equal parts soul singer and bluesy belter, funneling her own story — a tale of small-town roots, family tragedy, trials, and triumph — into the amplified anthems and haunting ballads that fill albums like Bliss Avenue and Love Lives On. With her newest project, Borrowed Time, she digs deep into her southern rock upbringing, saluting the loud, guitar-driven sounds that sound-tracked her childhood years in rural Wildwood, Florida.

Wildwood was a small place for someone with such big ideas. Raised by an outspoken family of Irish- Catholic New Yorkers, Fuchs didn’t fit in with the conservative culture of her hometown, and she developed a rebellious reputation at a young age. Music helped level her out. “My first-grade teacher took me under her wing,” she says of those early days in the Deep South. “I just loved music, so she took me to her Baptist church on the black side of town, where I was exposed to a lot of soul. That sound stuck with me.”

Little Folks: Classroom to Concert with Saratoga Chamber Players & Students, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 3pm-4:30pm

Children perform an original “No Place for Hate” composition after learning how to compose chamber music from inspiration to performance.

“From Classroom to Concert” shows how music-making is a fun, team effort. It includes children in the creative process through song or story and introduces them to the chamber music experience from initial inspiration of a musical idea, to composition, to the collaborative performance of that idea in a concert. The experience promotes music as another way to express one’s feelings about oneself and the world. This year’s program is based on the “No Place for Hate” project. Division Street School children and audience members turn an idea into a musical composition using the language of sound and find out how teamwork can be an important part of musical expression when musicians interact with one another to produce a unified sound, a musical passage, a complete harmonic composition.

Children hum musical suggestions to accompany passages of text. The tunes are recorded and arranged into a score by project director/composer Eliot Bailen to be sung by the students and played by the 5th grade orchestra along with SCP professional musicians.

The Fab Faux with The Hogshead Horns & Creme Tangerine Strings perform the ever-surprising, trailblazing classic album Revolver its entirety plus a glorious hodgepodge of the Beatles psychedelic singles such as I Am the Walrus, Strawberry Fields Forever, All You Need is Love and others.

With a commitment to the accurate reproduction of The Beatles’ repertoire, The Fab Faux eschews wigs, costumes and phony accents to impeccably recreate, note-for-note the treasured catalog of the world’s most famous rock group. The ensemble features five of the most respected NYC-based studio and touring musicians – Will Lee (bass), Jimmy Vivino (guitar), Rich Pagano (drums), Frank Agnello (guitar) and multi-instrumentalist, Jack Petruzzelli – along with horns and strings to perform the complex songs the Beatles crafted in the studio but never performed live in concert.

And did we mention that one of the film’s stars, Lynn Lowry (also known for her roles in David Cronenberg’s “Shivers” and Paul Schrader’s “Cat People”) will join us for a Q&A and Meet n’ Greet! She will also be available to sign autographs one hour before the screening and again after the Q&A.

A Night Out For You is a not for profit organization whose mission is creating an experience for an adult, undergoing cancer treatment, allowing them to remember who they are by forgetting their diagnosis for a few hours.
