50 years ago: The Pointer Sisters @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center

And although the Pointer Sisters’ performance was entertaining, possibly even great, the performance put on by their two dancing fans rivaled the professional act as an attention getter.

Starting on the lawn, the two women danced their way down the side of the amphitheater to a fast-paced version of “Some Peanuts” only to have their unleashed enthusiasm cooled by a party pooper in a plaid sports jacket.

30 years ago: Little Richard @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center

“I am the originato, the emancipator, and the architect of rock and roll,” 62-year-old Little Richard roared to the still-sizable crowd remaining for his 11 p.m. performance, and scant few would dsimiss his words as idle boasts.

20 years ago: Dave Matthews / Galactic @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center

 

20 years ago: Gillian Welch and David Rawlings @ Tanglewood (as part of “A Prairie Home Companion”

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are top-flight Nashville performers, with clear command of their genre in ” Goin’ Down the Road” and “Dear Someone.”

10 years ago: Kid Rock / Foreigner / The Packway Handle Band @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center

Crowd favorites were “Cold As Ice,” “Urgent,” “Double Vision,” “Head Games,” and “Feels Like The First Time.” The two major highlights of the show were the 1982 “Juke Box Hero,” on which founding member Mick Jones shredded flawlessly through an extended solo, and during the encore when Foreigner invited a group of 20 Saratoga Springs High School students to join on stage for the opportunity to sing along with the chorus of “I Want to Know What Love Is” at the SPAC show.
