Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ songwriter and guitarist Mike Campbell has just announced the release of Heartbreaker, his memoir. The book, being released on March 18th by Grand Central Publishing, catalogues Campbell’s life from growing up poor in Jacksonville, Florida to his meeting with Tom Petty and their subsequent personal and creative relationship. He covers many of the fine points of his career, including his work with artists like Don Henley and Stevie Nicks.
Earlier this year, Campbell’s current band, The Dirty Knobs, released the album Vagabonds, Virgins, and Misfits. Campbell is also on tour with fellow Heartbreaker Benmont Tench.
Since 2010, Peter Hook, former bassist for New Order and Joy Division, has been playing in his own band, “The Light,” since 2010. The band has been playing songs from both of his prior bands. In 2025, he will be on tour, covering New Order’s 2001 album Get Ready.
“Get Ready was a honeymoon record,” Hook said about the album. “Looking back now it was very enjoyable to make, and I think is massively underrated. It did sort the wheat from the chaff and led to a New Order mk2 which played better but had lost a naivety whilst gaining a maturity. Barney and I became a ‘power couple’ in Manchester during the making of the record but, sadly, the old problems recurred when we came to play live. The writing was on the wall from then on. The two of us worked very hard to make this a great record and I think we succeeded. I am looking forward to playing all the tracks, many of which have never been played live before. The Light will shine through … Get Ready!”

Primus drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander sent an email to the band announcing that he would no longer be playing, expressing that he had “lost his passion for playing.” This came as a shock to the band, who didn’t see it coming and had virtually no ability to talk to Alexander. They did, however, respect his decision. They released an official statement:
“On Thursday, October 17th, we received an email from Tim “Herb” Alexander expressing that effective immediately he would no longer be involved with Primus. It came as a complete shock to all of us here in the Primus camp.
On the heels of a wonderful Spring & Summer of touring and some fabulous plans ahead, it has been a bit bewildering for us that Herb would so abruptly opt out. After several attempts to communicate with Herb, his only response was another email stating that he has “lost his passion for playing,”. As disappointing as that is, we respect his choice and it’s forced us to make some tough decisions.
We considered cancelling the annual New Year’s show, but after much talk Les and Ler have decided to pivot to an augmented version of Primus featuring members of Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade. This will be an exciting special, one-time event.
As far as future Primus, the band is looking forward to performing in the Dominican Republic with Tool and others. Danny Carey has once again graciously offered to fill the drum throne.
For Sessanta, Primus plans on searching for the “greatest drummer on earth”. Details to follow…

The Cure recently released an album called Songs of a Lost World, and it has been met with incredible fanfare. Bill Pearis of Brooklyn Vegan released a thorough and heartfelt review.
“How perfect does Robert Smith’s voice still sound? Most of his ’80s contemporaries’ pipes are shadows of what they once were, but on The Cure’s Songs of a Lost World, this is the voice you remember from “Lullaby,” “Hot Hot Hot,” “A Forest,” “The Caterpillar”; the quirks, the falsetto, the growls, the personality, the anguish and other emotions, it’s all still here. Likewise, Songs of a Lost World is The Cure you remember, especially if you’re a fan of the dark stuff. There’s no attempt to be hip with the kids, no sugary sore thumb stabs at the pop charts, just 49 minutes of gray sky melancholy, largely inspired by the death of his mother, father and brother, all of whom he lost in the 16 years since The Cure’s last album.”

Lorain Hilton-Van Zandt – An Xperience Interview – by Rob Smittix.
RRX: Lorain, you are the owner of Hilton Music Center, right?
LH: Yep. I’ve owned it since ‘81.
RRX: Hilton goes way back. It’s really like the heritage music store around here. Remind me how many years it has been. I know it’s a lot.
LH: Well, it’s funny. I’ve always kind of guessed, because I’m the youngest of eight, and no one ever gives me the story straight. But since my dad died, I found this little file box and I took it home. Because of you calling me up, I actually opened it and found dates. I got all these DBAs from his various schools and things that he started and the first one I found was from 1948.
He had a school at 91 North Pearl Street – Steuben and Troy Music Academy – in 1957 which he sold to Art in 1959. And then he actually opened up his first store on 52 Columbia Street in 1961. So, thanks for making me do that.
RRX: No kidding. That’s really neat. I know they had the Hilton store in Westgate. That was you guys too, right?
LH: Yep. As things got a little iffy around the Columbia Street area, he moved up to 346 and then Westgate and then actually moved up to Colonie Center for five years. And that’s where I started teaching. I was just a kid. I was 13. All of us kids taught, every one of us, and there’s eight of us. We all taught and that’s how … you know, we went to college.
RRX: I was just at this lunch thing at the Ale House in Troy, called the Troy Music Mafia. I found out that it all really stemmed from, and was based around, Hilton in Troy. And that’s how that whole thing started. So you’ve got that history there too. My own personal history was that I took guitar lessons when I was a kid at the Westgate location.
That was back when I wanted to be the next Eddie Van Halen. And we still need more Eddie Van Halens. You know?
LH: We definitely do. Do you remember who your teacher was?
RRX: Glenn Weiser. (Inserted when I remembered)
LH: It’s funny, my dad used to put his students on a station called WOKO.
RRX: I don’t know.
LH: That was probably way before your time. I mean, this is going back to when he was teaching. I was young. I didn’t even know any of this stuff existed, but the Troy thing was interesting to me. You know what? Mark Galeo actually taught for me as well. So cool to have him teaching for Hilton’s again. He just came in one day. He’s like, “Lorain, do you think Art would actually come to this?” I’m like, totally. So it was so great to see that article. I also wanted to mention some well-known guys who taught for me over the years and some still do: Matt Smith, Dave Malachowski, Art Bernstein , Mike Campese, Jim Plumadore, (Eastwall) Doug Reynolds and the Erotics. Also, as a kid, I took flute lessons with Nick Brignola, only to have him sit in with my band Himalaya decades later at places like the Elbo Room, Justin’s, and Chambers.
RRX: There’s quite a bit of history there.
LH: I’m the last of the eight; Art is actually 20 years older than me. And people always argue with me that he was my dad. I was like, no, my dad, our dad … we go back even further than Art and they’re like, what? But it’s funny, even to this day people come in and they talk about our dad … crazy stories. And one guy showed me this old pic. I’ve got to show you this old pic and it’s got our phone number from back in the ‘50s. It was like six digits with letters. I’m like, oh, my goodness, that’s old.
RRX: You’ve got a great location now in the mall and still doing the lessons. Still got all the stellar equipment in there too.
LH: Now we’re carrying brands that I didn’t carry before; we’ve got the Fender franchise, Yamaha, Epiphone, and all sorts of recording gear. Our studios are all brand new and beautiful. We’ve got one of the largest schools around and I’ve got great teachers.
RRX: I’ve seen that. Yes, you do.
LH: Being in the mall allows us to get people in that normally wouldn’t do lessons. We’re getting the older crowd as well as the young kids. We actually have a recital coming up too, on November 9. We do a big show twice a year in the mall with all our students. And that’s pretty exciting.
RRX: So that’s November 9?
LH: Yeah, I’ve got a big stage, a beautiful grand piano, and lots of bands. It’s loud and it’s fun.
RRX: Excellent. And you obviously have been playing for a while yourself.
LH: Oh, yeah. I played flute. My brother John – we were very close, actually our whole family is ridiculously close. But he got me playing jazz, like, in grade five. Later on when I got back from school I got in a band with them called Himalaya, and we played for like, 10 years around the Capital Region. But I was always very dissatisfied with the way the flute sounded. I kinda needed more growl or something. So I had a paddle board with all kinds of stuff and it was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed that.
RRX: It all comes full circle now.
LH: And my store up in Colonie really started in 2008. I called my brother Bob. We found this beautiful store in Colonie Center and that’s kind of where we put our stores together again. Which is great. We moved upstairs by Macy’s; that’s our new location. Now I’m in business side-by-side with Hilton Piano, which was operated by my brother Bob and passed to his son, Bob Jr. So we’re actually two stores in one up there.
RRX: I have to ask. What is the deal with not being able to play “Stairway to Heaven” in a music store?
LH: Oh, that goes back to what, the ‘70s? We actually allow it now. It’s been that long. It’s welcome. It’s so funny, in a music store, there’s always that guy who’s serenading his girlfriend and that was the song for many years. People just got tired of it. But we did enforce that for a while but we lifted the ban on “Stairway to Heaven.”
RRX: I always wondered about that.
LH: I think the biggest compliment we’ve been getting in our store is that people say, wow, every guitar is in tune and they’re clean and play great. Well, thanks to our tech Joel.
RRX: Anything else you’d want the people to know about Hilton Music Center?
LH: I think our biggest claim to fame with customers right now is that we offer lifetime service on our guitars. We do full setups for free, but I do wanna say, Floyd Rose and the Fender Vintera where you have to take the necks off to do an adjustment are excluded. But every other guitar, we take care of them because, often, those are our students and they might come out of their lesson room with their teacher, “Hey, can you fix this?” And we just take care of it, which is really a great thing. And we also give people a free lesson with their purchases, which is really nice.

Matt Turk and C Lanzbom joined forces to form Deadgrass, a string band
adventure through Jerry Garcia’s musical world. Bassist Dave Richards,
banjo player Boo Reiners and fiddler Kensuke Shoji complete this fine
group of seasoned pros exploring the life works of Jerry Garcia on the
instruments that first inspired him. Deadgrass celebrates and interprets the
music of Jerry Garcia, drawing from Old & in the Way, JGB, Jerry’s Jug
Band days and The Grateful Dead.
A seasoned recording artist and multi-instrumentalist, Matt Turk is a
veteran performer who has performed and recorded with Pete Seeger,
opened for Judy Collins, The Doobie Brothers, Fiona Apple and the
Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart. He has performed at the Clearwater Festival,
Gathering of the Vibes, Atlanta’s Music Midtown, Jazz at Lincoln Center
The Capitol Theatre and The Beacon Theatre. Matt has recorded for
Warner Bros Records with Gaby Moreno & Matter Music.
Grammy award winner C Lanzbom is a touring and studio guitarist with
producing, performing, writing and engineering credits with Pete Seeger,
Bruce Springsteen, Crystal Bowersox, Shlomo Carlebach and Soulfarm.
C’s studio, Sherwood Ridge, is a state of the art recording facility just north
of New York City. C has numerous television and film song placements. His
affection and passion for Jerry Garcia’s music has been a major influence.
Bassist Dave Richards performs in Hamilton on Broadway and has
recorded and performed with The Indigo Girls, Rosanne Cash, Buster
Poindexter, Madeline Peyroux, Jewel and Richie Havens. He has toured
throughout Europe, Canada and the USA, appearing at Ottawa Jazz,
Toronto Blues festival, The Hollywood Bowl and Austin City Limits. At the
age of 17 Dave was playing jazz five nights a week in Orlando, Florida with
Billy Peebles, the drummer for Ray Charles on many classic Atlantic
recordings.
Banjo player Boo Reiners is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed,
recorded, filmed and toured with Dispatch, Phil Lesh, Al Kooper, Pete
Seeger, Charlie Louvin, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, Michael Moore, Amy
Poehler, Natalie Merchant, Martin Sexton, and many others. In the studio
and on tour with world music pioneers The Klezmatics, he helped the group
to win their 2007 Grammy Award for “Wonder Wheel: Lyrics By Woody
Guthrie.”
Jazz violinist Kensuke Shoji was born in Gifu, Japan. He joined his father’s
bluegrass band as a teenager. As a young adult he moved to the U.S.A. to
study jazz violin with Berklee String Department chair Matt Glaser, and
world renowned violinist Christian Howes. Kensuke moved to New York
City in 2013 to play with Alex Hargreaves, Barry Harris, Jacob Jolliff, Maria
Muldaur and more.

RRX: Different people in the band will like different songs. A drummer’s favorite song on the release will be different than the guitar player’s. What are each of your favorite songs from your most recent album?

RRX: Like songs, every artist has a unique feeling about their first show. What was your first show like? Was it your best show? If not, what was your best show like?
Unintelligents: Our first show was at No Fun and was definitely not our best because we weren’t exposed yet, but we all start somewhere. Our best show so far was the most recent at R.P.I with GZ Basement and the RatDen in Albany, the atmosphere at these two shows was insane, people went crazy!
RRX: Is there a song you wrote that really died on the vine? Something you all like but somehow just couldn’t make it work. You swear never to play it live, that sort of thing?
Unintelligents: The one that died on the vine was Demise. People tell us that they really like the song, some of us in the band like it and some of us don’t, but that is definitely the one we wont play live for a while
RRX: You sing or you rap, you play guitar, play drums, what have you, you have no doubt struggled to learn music. Something probably tripped you up. What was it for each of you? What did you have to overcome (bands, pick a member)?
Ben: My biggest mountain that I had to climb was timing, even since I was in high school, it was hard for me, but I’ve got it down now, for the most part.
RRX: Let’s talk about your next project, your next few. Just not the ones you’re working on now. The ones you have your eyes on for the future. What’s coming to us?
Unintelligents: For the last album and EP we recorded in an attic with a Presonus interface. For these newer ones we’re going into a studio and recording live which should make things sound better.
RRX: What would you like fans to know before they come to see you play? (No basic stuff; get specific.)
Unintelligents: To our fans that come to see us, get active in the pit really, just beat the hell out of each other and enjoy the music. We’re hardcore; we want some hardcore movement in there!

A passion project that has been brewing since the mid-1990s for the lead singer of Misty Blues, Gina Coleman, whose encounter with the legendary Odetta at the Bottom Line club in New York City as a guest of Arlo Guthrie left a powerful impression and was a seminal moment in her career. This inspiration came full circle in the form of a live recorded album in May of 2023. The switch to acoustic instrumentation and performing folk standards was a switch for the band, but pushing to the edges of the blues genre is nothing new for the band. Ultimately, Gina has expressed on multiple occasions that African-American folk music is most certainly blues in her book.

Super 400 is Joe Daley on drums, Kenny Hohman on guitar and vocals, and Lori Friday on electric bass. The band formed in 1996 in Troy NY, and has gained legendary status in the
Capital District of New York. Super 400 has an electric and relentless approach to their live shows, intuitively blending a classic 60s-70s heavy rock vibe with contemporary melodic pop mastery to create something uniquely their own.

For the better part of a decade, Christopher Paul Stelling had been a feverish and itinerant troubadour, spilling guts and blood and sweat in soul-scraping solo sets. He’d lived up the lifestyle, too, hydrating for the stage with booze. By the end of 2017, he’d gone sober after recognizing that chunks of his life had disappeared. Since his debut album, Songs of Praise and Scorn, which garnered critical acclaim for its raw, authentic approach to Americana and folk music. Stelling’s subsequent albums further established him as a significant voice in contemporary folk, praised for their lyrical depth and masterful musicianship.

The adjustments that our ancient brains need to make to reconcile our lives with these new technologies is all a very novel consideration. This is all happening fast.
If you look out into the online world, it can be a bit much. The curators of various bodies of information can completely shape our perspectives. It’s easy to start thinking that the world really is the thing you experience online. But there’s good news. It’s not!!! Most people are kind and completely willing to be decent in real life. I personally need to curate a little trash in my online consumption, but maybe not all of it…
You are not your social media profile, and your worth is not determined by “likes.” You are not your political affiliations, and you are worth far more than the data that is harvested from you. And I would always rather run into you at Hannaford than have a zoom call. This new technology really allows me to make music in a way my heroes couldn’t have dreamt of but it’s a tool, not an identity.
