Dropkick Murphys have announced their time-honored, annual St. Patrick’s Day tour. They’ll be supported by the punk bands The Metzingers and Teenage Bottlerocket. They’ll have five shows in Boston before St. Patrick’s Day itself, which will be at Citizens House of Blues. They’ll also be featuring The Bouncing Souls, Hot Water Music and others.

Sales for the Boston dates go on sale today.

They Might Be Giants

They Might Be Giants have released an album today, and it coincides with their announcement of a 2025 tour. The will be in the south in March, the West Coast in May, and stops include Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Nashville, Asheville, Orlando, Seattle and others.

The band will be on tour in the UK and Ireland before that, and will be playing a few shows in New York in December.

Celebrated country musician Jason Isbell has announced a 2025 American tour. It will be called “An Intimate Evening with Jason Isbell” and will not feature Isbell’s band, The 400 Unit. It’ll start in Chicago on February 15th and will wrap in Atlanta.

You may not like this one if you have no sense of humor. If that is the case, I’ll give you the trolly problem. A trolly is going down the track, and five people are tied to the track. Yada yada yada… okay, you’re still here, cool. So what we have is called the North American Wife Carrying Championship. It took place in Newry, Maine, and drew people from all over the world, whittled down to just over 30 couples. It is exactly how it sounds. The “husband” carries the “wife” 278 yards through mud and obstacles for the chance to win the “wife’s” weight in both beer and cash.

I’m using a lot of quotes because it doesn’t really have to be a husband carrying a wife. They don’t have to be married, and they don’t have to be a man and a woman, but they are “husband and wife” for the purposes of the contest.

It started in Finland, with the legend of Ronkainen the Robber, who pillaged towns and did indeed carry wives away.

Most of the competitors carried their wives over their shoulder like a backpack. Can you imagine this being a big public thing? I would love to see it here. C’mon, it’s whimsy.

From what they’re saying, this contest is insane and needs high agility. 278 yards, muddy, rocks and branches, I’m going to go ahead and say they need the wife’s weight in beer just to relax after the trip.

I actually want to do it, but it’s daunting. And I don’t have a girlfriend. I mean basically, it’s just Uber but a super small trip. And I think that there are a number of sporting pursuits in which the winner will be paid in their weight in beer. I’m 400 pounds; how many kegs is that?

ALBUM REVIEW: “The Second Coming” by Malefic

Malefic is a four-piece blackened death metal band from central New York. They have recently released their album The Second Coming. Malefic raises the bar with this release; it’s nothing short of Divine Consumption for your eardrums. Each song containing brutal guitar work with a complimentary rhythm section. A drumming style comparable to heavy metal drumming legends. Complementing it all, is a vocal monster achieving all the great high and lows of the death/black metal genre. The satanic panic was energetically popular in the 80’s, but Malefic could very well establish The Second Coming of the satanic
panic for the modern day with this release.

Song highlight for “The Second Coming” album was a tough one to pick, so I picked two. The opening track “IV EQUITES.” Brutal introduction to the album and foreshadows the brilliance that continues through each track. The second pick is “ENCOMIUM/ THE SECOND COMING.” A song that totally switches it up and shows a different side of the band.

Check out Malefic’s FB page for upcoming shows and merch updates. Malefic just recently played at the Field of The Dead Fest in Cord, Arkansas on October 12. They were also winners of The Best Black Metal Band at the 2024 Extreme Music Awards, solidifying their ranks in the metal community.

When I was in eighth grade there was a girl named Christine that I used to argue with every day. She sat next to me in science class. Before the teacher would start talking, and the bell would ring, we would have our daily battle between who was better.  It was Duran Duran vs. Kiss. I of course was defending that kiss was the best. I still stand by that statement with my own personal tastes however, as time has gone by, I’ve learned to appreciate just how great Duran Duran is in their own right. When I bought the tickets to the show all I could think of is her sitting next to me during the concert saying, “I TOLD YOU SO”.

All these years have gone by, so even though I developed a strong liking for this band, I never thought that I would see them in concert. However, out of the blue sky they fell into Turning Stone Casino arena last night. There were plenty of male spectators, but there were definitely a bigger percentage of female spectators.  So when the lights went down, and the band came on the stage, there was a roar that only a large group of females could make when their favorite pastime “boy band” came on stage. However, that’s just it.  Duran Duran is truly a kickass BAND. They give the term “boy band” a GOOD name. They are living proof that you can be good looking AND know how to play an instrument.  Ladies and gentlemen here is Simon Le Bon on vocals, John Taylor on bass, Roger Taylor on drums, and Nick Rhodes on Keyboards.  They are all very talented in their own right, and John Taylor especially is a beast on bass guitar.  The only original member missing from the band was Andy Taylor who is currently and unfortunately battling prostate cancer.  With the exception of some of their synthesizer album loops, the band was all live and playing their asses off. Vocally, Simon sounded fantastic and they filled in their other parts with people, not computer tracks. The Pop world could learn a thing or two about how it should be done from Duran Duran.  The audience connects with people, NOT a bunch of backing tracks! Duran added two female backing singers Rachel O’ Connor and Anna Ross, along with saxophone player Simon Willescroft, and guitarist Dominic Brown. All together they worked as a great unit giving the audience the unique sound of Duran Duran!

What did they play for the close to sold out arena at Turning Stone Casino? They opened the show with Night Boat, a single off of their very first album that came out in 1981!  Followed by The Wild boys, Hungry Like The Wolf, James Bond’s A View To A Kill theme, and Notorious.  What a way to start an 80s style show.  The audience was LOUD, and up dancing at their seats.  After the super singles mania, the band settled into a few songs off of their Halloween themed album, Danse Macabre, which was released in 2023.  They also released this month a Danse Macabre De Luxe addition.  It’s now late October, so I guess it was very fitting.  From those albums, they performed Supernature, Super Lonely Freak (and busted into a bit of Rick James’ Super Freak), Bury A Friend, Evil Woman (An ELO cover), Psycho Killer (Talking Heads Cover), Confession Of The Afterlife, and Sekret Oktober 31st.  In the middle of all of that Halloween music, Anna Ross came out front to sing a duet with Simon called Come Undone off of their 1993 album titled The Wedding Album.  This mid-section of the show was cool and fun with all of the Halloween graphic images behind them, but a little slow going for a little too long in my opinion.  However, the band probably wanted to bring you down that cool, but chill road so then they could punch you right in the face with their 80s barrage of chart busters.  Ordinary World, which is a beautiful song, was the only non-80s song the rest of the show.  The madness crowd screaming frenzy resumed during The Reflex, New Moon On Monday, Union Of The Snake, White Lines, Planet Earth, Girls On Film, Save a Prayer, and Rio.  Talk about a party of foot stomping hits!

There is no question that Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductees Duran Duran will go down in history as one of the biggest acts that ruled the most memorable decade of music.  They really have a unique pop/rock sound that can’t be compared anyone.  It’s now 2024, and all of these years later, you could tell the band was truly happy to be there and so was the audience.  The boys from Birmingham, England electrified the central New York crowd, and showed why they are not only a 1980s staple, but why music from that decade will continue to live on forever.  Three letters sums it up.  F U N.

It’s a dark and stormy night and the bridge to the recording studio has washed out, leaving Hollywood A-lister Jasmine Vander Hooven alone to perform a podcast of the classic ghost story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” with two local yokels–the Knickerbocker Brothers. The trio reenacts Irving’s mysterious tale with devastatingly funny–and spooky–results! With live Foley sound effects and music, Irving’s tale gets a contemporary treatment that honors the original and is sure to inspire and delight young audiences.

A 3½’ foot composite of James Bond and Bruce Lee, Weng Weng came to Leavold’s attention thanks to his starring role in the diminutive spy caper, “For Y’Ur Height Only.” Eight years, and three mortgages later, Leavold not only got the inside scoop on this incredible man, but also so very much more!

ALBUM REVIEW: The Erotics “Destined to Damnation”

Once the opening riffs commence and the first track starts to take off, it’s very difficult not to turn this up to 11. The Erotics “Destined to Damnation” is a horror/rock and roll hybrid with anthem-type hooks and electrifying riffs. Perfect soundtrack for the frightful time of year, your local strip clubs, or just blaring it to irritate the neighborhood. With catchy riffs and lyrics, “Destined to Damnation” spreads across the musical fabric of heavy metal, punk, and rock and roll. The Erotics are not only veterans and established themselves on the local music scene, but are also no strangers to dirty rock and roll releases.

A song highlight for “Destined to Damnation” is a track called “Bon Amputee. This track sticks out for its unique approach. Comparable to a slow dance song for the starving cannibal, “Bon Amputee” will have you in the mood for some morbid, late night finger foods.

The Erotics will be appearing at the Yin Yang Festival on October 26 at the Saratoga Springs City Center. They will also be performing alongside the band Spread Eagle on November 9 at Empire Underground in Albany NY.

INTERVIEW: Gozer

Emerging from Albany, the local band Gozer is gaining recognition for their distinctive approach to gritty hard rock and doom songwriting. This style is closely linked to the subgenres of stoner rock and doom metal, characterized by low-tuned guitars and a strong influence from the iconic band Black Sabbath. Gozer has elevated their unique sound and songwriting abilities, successfully reinventing the genre to create a signature style. With heavy, bluesy riffs complemented by dynamic vocals, Gozer is introducing a fresh perspective to the genre, attracting new listeners who may be less familiar with it. Gozer has received nominations from the Edison Music Awards, the 2024 Extreme Music Awards, and for Favorite Metal Artist at the 2023 Listen Up Awards.

I was able to get in touch with the band, who had some free time from their busy schedule, to answer some questions. Shining some light on these four talented artists that make up the band Gozer.

RRX: What are the main influences that helped develop your sound?

Gozer: We’re heavily influenced by a mix of two things: (1) both classic and contemporary stoner rock/metal ala Sleep, Kyus, Red Fang. (2) Modern metalcore sounds ala Erra and Story of the Year. Sean is to blame for the metalcore influences and Nick K is to blame for the stoner rock vibes. Collectively, our sound is a result of the “Frankensteining” between Nick M’s technical prog-driven drumming, Mykah’s powerful vocals, Sean’s “Jessie Cash-style riffs” and Nick K’s “Blackmore/Iommi-style riffs.” Gozer is still a relatively new project that hasn’t branched outside of the 518 much. The future holds more experimentation with gear, tones, and writing in the hopes that that sound will be one that people organically respond to. If people don’t respond to it, no worries, because we all really enjoy creating the project regardless of the response.

RRX: What band or bands would you want to tour with, or play a show alongside?

Gozer: If the powers that be would permit a Gozer, Dozer, Geezer, Heezer, Gozu lineup … we’d be thrilled! Jokes aside, Ruby the Hatchet, Green Lung, and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats would all be so sick to play with. We’ve been dying to play more regionally with our friends in Black Tongue Reverend and have been actively pursuing that goal. Having recently been given the amazing opportunity to open for acts like King Buffalo, The Well, Year of The Cobra, EYEHATEGOD, Leather Lung, and Geezer, we just want to play with and align ourselves with quality people who are cool to hang out with. Every one of those bands were super approachable and had no problem being real with us about their experiences within the music industry.

RRX: How do you go about writing songs? Describe your writing process.

Gozer: Sean (bass) or Nick K (guitar) typically bring either full or half-finished demos to the table. Nick K will record riffs on his phone, let them marinate, and build them from the riff out. Lyrics and melody are usually the last thing added. After our individual homework is done and we meet in rehearsal, the songs can transform into something completely different. It’s a very collaborative process. For example, “Zeke” was originally intended to be played at a much faster tempo. When one of us suggested to play it slow, it just felt right. We have another song in the works called “Up in Smoke” which is very different than the original demo. The process can take as long as a year or two, as in the case of “Dust.” Or, the process can take a day, as in the case of “Poisoned Crown.” Every creator can appreciate “the zone” you get in where things just fly off the pen, and that was the case when Sean wrote “Poisoned Crown.” On our Instagram page, close to the beginning of it, there’s a montage Nick K made from a bunch of different John Carpenter movies. The music in the background is the original demo of our song “Gallows.” That is another example of how songs can morph into something different than originally intended.

RRX: What differentiates you from other local bands?

Gozer: If we’re being completely honest, not much! We’re just like every other artist who enjoys creating and sharing their work with new audiences. We just prefer to do that via “stoner rock/stoner metal” music. We are, however, consistently trying to add to our live shows. That includes experimenting with set order, messing with different types of intros/outros, planning stage movement, etc. One thing we’re proud of is our efforts to promote and support other local bands. Every Monday, Nick K plays local music, of all genres, throughout the day at his work. To date, 33 DIFFERENT bands have been played throughout the day at Capital Area PT and Wellness in Malta. Everyone has their own 9-5 lives, families, and obligations, so it’s hard to always go to local shows to support and take photo/video on top of your own band’s schedule. But a rising tide helps all ships, so strengthening our local scene will help everyone in the end game.

RRX: Any memorable moments playing shows?

Gozer: Fortunately, there have been a growing number of moments. We’ll never forget the feedback we got from the crowd at a house show a few years ago. They were going nuts, moving, shouting, and having a blast. Another cool moment was seeing a group of people “rowing” to the beat of our song “Zeke.” It’s also always a memorable experience rubbing elbows with bigger touring bands in your genre too. The last two shows we played at Empire Underground were great because the place was packed, and the crowd was giving off such good energy. The energy of the crowd is probably a common denominator in most band’s memorable moments, regardless of venue size. We always have an amazing time at Desperate Annies for Super Dark shows! At the end of the day, we think it’s important to recognize that we’re playing music with friends, so all the smaller moments in between the big ones are great as well.

RRX: What equipment do you use?

Gozer: Sean (bass): TC electronic K410 cabinet and Peavey Mini Max head, Darkglass pedals and effects, Squier vintage modified jazz bass w/ roasted maple neck (AKA the stormtrooper bass).

Nick K: Reverend Sensei RA guitar, Orange TH30 head through an Orange PPC4x12 cab loaded w/ Weber Silver Wolf and Grey Wolf Speakers.

Nick M: uses whatever drum kit is in front of him and kills it every time.

Mykah: SE mic and a straight stand.

RRX: What are your future goals as a band?

Gozer: Our biggest goal is to continually reach new listeners both in and outside of the 518. We really want to grow our organic base and hope that this coverage will expose us to new ears. There’s a lot that we (and every other local musician) put into our songs. Please give our songs a legitimate listen, listen to or read the lyrics, immerse yourself into our hooks, and give us honest feedback … even if it’s negative! While pursuing our goals of organic engagement, we’re going to keep tweaking and reflecting on our live performances. We want our live show to become a fun event to attend. Bigger goals include rising to a level to play various festivals within the stoner/doom community (Desertfest, RippleFest, etc.) Another goal of ours is to always remain humble, hungry, polite, easy to work with, and inspired.

We want to thank our pals at “Botched: A D&D Podcast.” They just started their ninth season hot off their annual panel at Dragon Con. We’ve been writing their theme song for years, and they put out both fun and amusing content. Week Forty-Three: Jesse Sample’s Freak of the Week “Cozumel”

This is Jesse Sample. Every once in a while, the experience washes over me and I am able to find peace. Things like the ocean, the mountains, or even the steady hum of a car engine can give me some perspective on my existence. They are those rare moments where there is nowhere to be but where I am and nothing to do except what I’m doing. These moments are precious and certain types of music fit them.

Making music can have that effect, but so can a day at the beach with a loved one. Being stuck in traffic isn’t really being stuck if there’s a great radio DJ playing the tracks that even you out. Maybe these moments of “taking it in” or “letting it wash over you” are things we can create.

As with anything worth having, it’s not free…but it doesn’t necessarily cost money. If you want the centeredness of being deep into a yoga routine, you’re gonna have to clear a part of your schedule and you’re gonna have to break out your mat. You might need to consciously say in your head, “I am not going to waste another minute of my life worrying about something dumb.” And eventually you pay your way in.

Maybe the cost of connection is the abandonment of stupid hang-ups.
