Damn Tall Buildings, The Linda, Albany, 8pm-11pm
“If you like your bluegrass served with a little punch, attitude, grit and gravy, with that busking spirit that was so present and palpable in the early incarnations of Old Crow Medicine Show and made your realize that string band music could be so much more than fuddy-duddy reenactments by crusty ol’ relics, then the Damn Tall Buildings will slide in nice as a welcome addition to your listening rotation. Bluegrass at heart, but pulling from a wide range of influences including swing, ragtime, jazz, and even a hint of contemporary perspective in the songwriting, they offer virtually unmatched energy and enthusiasm, underpinned by intelligent songs that don’t skimp on the infectiousness…”

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, The Palace Theatre, Albany, 8pm
The Hunt for Green October
After over 20 years, Les Claypool has regrouped his Fearless Flying Frog for The Hunt for Green October Tour. Long considered to be one of the animated bassist’s most beloved bands, this incarnation of the ever-morphing act boasts longtime Frog Brigade members Skerik (saxophone) and Mike Dillon (percussion, vibraphone), as well as Sean Lennon (guitar), Harry Waters (keyboards) and Paulo Baldi (drums). The regrouping comes just over a decade after the Frog Brigade issued their lone album, Purple Onion, which Tom Waits heralded as one of his favorite records of all time.
Initially conceived during Claypool’s short break from Primus in the early 2000s, the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade quickly became known as one of the bassist’s most creative and improvisational outfits. Throughout their Summer of Green Tour, the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade will deliver a mix of original material and choice covers from throughout Claypool’s rich catalog. The group will also perform Pink Floyd’s 1977 psychedelic masterpiece, Animals—a staple on their original run—nightly.

Lonesome Ace Stringband with opener Basset, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 8pm-10pm
LAS bring grit, skill & abandon to Americana music, bridging bluegrass and folk traditions into an unorthodox & fun blend of original tunes.
Masters of their trade, The Lonesome Ace Stringband bring grit, skill and abandon to Americana music, bridging old-time, bluegrass and folk traditions into a seamless hybrid of original material that is at once fresh and timeless.
Instrumentation alone sets this Toronto-based trio’s sound apart: consisting simply of fiddle (John Showman), clawhammer banjo (Chris Coole), and upright bass (Max Heineman). The spine-tingling harmonies and interchanging lead vocals only bring more magic to the equation. They’ve become festival favorites at Rockygrass, Celtic Connections, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Merlefest and regularly tour the USA, UK, Germany and, of course, Canada.
With more than a decade of group music-making under their belts, they’re releasing their fifth album, a feisty and mighty collection of all-original material titled Try To Make It Fly (October 13, 2023).
Call Lonesome Ace Stringband whatever genre you want – they are just unorthodox enough to be brilliant.

The Furious Bongos play Zappa, The Linda, Albany, 8pm-10pm
We’re only in it for the money.
HAHAHAHA
Actually, we’re just a bunch of professional musicians with pretty diverse backgrounds who decided to take on a pretty big challenge and have some fun in the process.
Now, you might ask, “Oh yeah? ‘Professional’ musicians, eh? What makes you think you can play Frank’s music as well as [insert Zappa family member here]?”
Well…you might not have heard of us individually, but you have heard of the people we’ve spent our careers working with (and we don’t mean “I played a 10am slot at a festival once that was headlined by Famous Artist X”):
Yo Yo Ma, Mick Fleetwood, BB King, REM, Vinnie Colaiuta, Oasis, LA Philharmonic, Madison Symphony, Arthur Barrow, Munich Philharmonic, Bryan Beller, India Arie, Popa Chubby, Limelight: A Tribute To Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Chicago Lyric Opera, Arrested Development, Madison Opera, blah blah blah….you get the idea.
When it came to the music, Frank was constantly changing things, and he allowed his band members to bring their unique voices to the table. He also understood that his live performances were entertainment: it’s supposed to be a rock show, not a piano recital.
With that in mind, we don’t think playing Song X from Album Y note-for-note while staring at our shoes is the proper way to go about this.
The result of that approach (combined with a lot of homework) is a show that pays respect to Zappa’s legacy, but is also new and different and dangerous and FUN, with lots of eyebrows.
Kinda like Frank.
