Steve Katz with special guest Patti Rothberg, The Linda, Albany, 8pm-10pm

Guitarist/singer/songwriter/storyteller Steve Katz has played on an enviable string of recordings during the 1960s and ’70s in acoustic folk, jazz, blues, R&B, hard rock, and almost every other popular genre that’s come along in America since the start of the 1960s.

Katz was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1945 and grew up in the upstate city of Schenectady. Already a gifted musician in his early teens, he was good enough to get hired for a local television program called Teenage Barn, doing his versions of pop hits of the late ’50s.

As he got older, Steve was drawn to folk music and blues. He studied traditional American guitar styles with Dave Van Ronk and the Rev. Gary Davis. Eventually, he became part of a circle of similarly minded folk and blues enthusiasts who formed the Even Dozen Jug Band, which also included John Sebastian, Maria Muldaur, David Grisman, and Stefan Grossman.

Nick Shoulders & The Okay Crawdad “All Bad Tour” with guest Maddy Kirgo, Lark Hall, Albany, 8pm

All Bad, the latest album from Nick Shoulders, ultimately encapsulates everything that makes Shoulders’ inimitable form of country music so vital: a heady balance of dazzling musicianship and punk defiance, coupled with gritty eccentricity and a generational connection to the roots of the genre. With a singing style inherited from his family’s vocal lineage, Nick’s songs achieve the rare feat of imparting difficult truths while inciting a certain joyful abandon, balancing a sound forged by years of hard travel with a heartfelt reverence for the origins of country music. In the spirit of Hazel Dickens and Jimmy Driftwood, the incisive yet wildly jubilant All Badvocally objects to the reckless destruction of the natural landscape and development run rampant, while still offering plenty of joy and dance-ready rhythms. Spanning a variety of early country styles, the album’s infectious harmonies shine alongside everything from jangling cajun waltzes to surf-rock infused bluesy ballads–all tied together by a voice seemingly out of place in this century, yet ever ready to speak up about its problems.

The Wood Brothers, The Palace Theatre, Albany, 8pm

w/s/g Maya De Vitry

The Wood Brothers have learned to trust their hearts. For the better part of two decades, they’ve cemented their reputation as freethinking songwriters, road warriors, and community builders, creating a catalog of diverse music and a loyal audience who’ve grown alongside them through the years. That evolution continues with Heart is the Hero, the band’s eighth studio album. Recorded analog to 16-track tape, this latest effort finds its three creators embracing the chemistry of their acclaimed live shows by capturing their performances in real-time direct from the studio floor with nary a computer in sight. An acoustic-driven album that electrifies, Heart is the Hero is
stocked with songs that target not only the heart, but the head and hips, too.

American Panorama, SPAC, Saratoga Springs, 7pm

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center

Thirteen musicians from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center perform a program of American-inspired music, that culminates with Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

The United States of America maintains its identity as a kaleidoscope of cultures, with just about everyone and everything we know having roots elsewhere. CMS’s American Panorama program illustrates this phenomenon in music unmistakably American in spirit yet diverse in dialect, each composer having drawn from distinct sources: Harry T. Burleigh from his African-American heritage; Antonín Dvořák from his exposure to Native-American and African-American music combined with his innate Czech sensibility; Arthur Foote, a leading 19th-century composer who, as a member of the Boston Six, forged a uniquely American sound clothed in European traditions; and Aaron Copland, whose intensive studies in Paris afforded him the technique to express the flavor of America as no other.

Mrs. Doubtfire, Proctors Theatre, Schenectady, 2pm

Lui Collins & Bob Franke, Proctors Theatre, Schenectady

Lui Collins: “One of New England’s clearest and most distinctive folk voices, with unusually piercing lyrical insight…” -HARTFORD COURANT

“Franke songs are often devastatingly simple, joyfully anthemic, just plain quirky or wonderfully suggestive—but always, unforgettable” CHICAGO MAGAZINE

A rare night with two of our finest singer-songwriters who for decades have been among our most loved performers, joining in concert! Lui Collins and Bob Franke have each often appeared solo here at The Step, from our days across from Albany’s Washington Park to the present at Proctors. A concert by either is always an event. Pretty Much the Best Comedy Show – Andy Sandford, Proctors Theatre, Schenectady, 8pm

Pretty Much The Best Comedy Show includes a host, feature act, and guest comedians, providing nearly two hours of entertainment at the Capital Region’s premier alternative comedy room. Upstate New York’s premiere stand-up showcase, Pretty Much the Best Comedy Show, has been thriving at Proctors since summer 2014, presenting a steady, diverse stream of talent to an ever-growing audience.

Andy Sandford is a comedian who got funny in Atlanta, then moved to New York City, where he established himself as one if NY’s top tier comics. In 2021, Andy moved back to Atlanta to record his latest album, “Basket Case,” released late last year. Andy has performed his jokes on Conan and The Late Late Show with James Corden. Andy’s debut album, Me the Whole Time; was one of Splitsider’s “9 Best Standup Albums of The Year.“ His hour special, “Shameful Information,” is currently featured on Amazon Prime. Sandford even played an animated version of himself on Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The Village Voice called him, “one of New York’s comedic gems;” a nice gesture, but not enough to keep him in New York. Andy is out of Atlanta now (sorry NY).

Thanks to their dedication, innovation and perseverance, the group has established itself as a benchmark for son jarocho, bringing innovation to traditional Mexican music.

Caña Dulce y Caña Brava delivers a unique sound composed on top by the poetry and harmony of their voices, floating around the vibrations of the horse jaw, the mystical harmony of the harp and the strums of the jaranas, while the beat is foot-tapped on stage and flashy colors emanate from their dresses. The music virtuosity of its members are deeply rooted in the jarocho tradition, where all of them have learned directly from ancient masters and have developed and proven their skills both at national and international stages.
