Alan Sparhawk (Of Low) / Maria BC, No Fun, Troy, 7pm-11pm
Alan Sparhawk
Thirty years into a career of music making, 2023 finds Alan Sparhawk entering uncharted territory. Sparhawk co-founded the band Low alongside vocalist and drummer Mimi Parker, who passed away in late 2022. Their music derived elemental power from its fearless exploration of quiet, gentle places. Low released thirteen albums and influenced a movement of spacious, graceful, intimate, and ever-evolving music.
Over time, Low’s anthemic songs heightened in urgency and tone, unearthing new layers of musical exploration and lyrical questioning. Their final album, Grammy nominated “Hey What,” was released in 2021 to universal acclaim and marked a high point in their musical evolution and trajectory.
Sparhawk has recently been playing with various collaborators and projects with friends and family members, including guest appearances with Yo La Tengo, Trampled by Turtles, Peder Mannerfelt, Damien, and funk band Derecho Rhythm Section. At the end of 2023 Alan did a short European tour in the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal and he will be releasing new music in 2024.

Nordlys Global Voices: Emilio Solla and Antonio Lizana, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 7pm-9pm
Latin Grammy winner (2020) and twice Grammy nominated, Argentina born and New York based pianist and composer Emilio Solla teams up for his thirteenth album with flamenco-jazz rising star Antonio Lizana. Together they have created a highly original piece, El Siempre Mar, where old Argentine folk songs live together with original compositions from both artists. In this new take on the “cantes de ida y vuelta” (roundtrip songs), these two artists have managed to find a unique and contemporary meeting point between the music of Argentina, the south of Spain, and jazz. Here, traditional songs by foundational composers such as Atahualpa Yupanqui and Astor Piazzolla take new dimensions through the inclusion of modern harmonies and jazz improvisation. The beauty and uniqueness of Solla’s arrangements and piano playing is matched by the expressiveness of Lizana’s voice and saxophone.
Made possible by The Nordlys Foundation.
Stream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. Enjoy one week of access with your live stream ticket.
