Eighty Gee – Interview – “A Hot Minute” – by Liam Sweeny.
RRX: We all get into creative pursuits for different reasons. Some people get into music and the arts to escape; for some, it’s a natural outlet. What was music, and creativity in the larger sense, for you?
EG: Music and Creativity to me is freedom! It’s the best form of it because it’s usually fueled by your emotion. Emotion is one of the purest traits because it really shows you who you are.
RRX: Where was the first place you felt comfortable performing? People talk about places where they cut their teeth musically. Where was that for you? And does that place, or that scene still exist, or was it lost to time?
EG: The first place I felt comfortable performing was RBC Jazz Club at my first big performance. The worst sound I would have to say would be a show I did in New Jersey for someone. The spot was for strippers so we performed on stage with a pole on it. The mics were cutting in and out… .that place is gone now.
RRX: Creative people move culture, especially musical performers. We have to thread the circumstances in our lives in a way to affect others. And this is sometimes a responsibility put on us. How do you, specifically, move culture?
EG: I move culture by keepin it moving! No matter what’s going on I will find a way to keep the ball going. Tunnel vision, even If i react to a situation nothing stops the show! I bring longevity and teach that moving genuinely will get u the furthest. I also bring the camaraderie and brotherhood, I show you that a family and their love and support brings peace and wins. Stay you; it always works.
RRX: Music is a good traveling companion. Play it in a car on that long ride and the miles disappear. But you gotta have something to play. You have something out, maybe more than one thing – can you tell us about some of it?
EG: I have a series of tapes called “GrizzleeeWorld” Saga parts 1-4! On every platform. But most recently I’m working on my EP “KILLEAN KILLEAN” Dropping Friday, March 29th! This project I wanted to play with flows and genres so I brought a lot of features so I could jump into different aspects, challenge my self to sharpen my pen and make different genres.
RRX: One of the biggest challenges musicians face is getting their name out there. There’s so much competition, and technology makes it possible for everyone to be out there with a well-produced offering. What’s your favorite way to promote?
EG: When technology rises you have to be primitive, you have to find ways to stay creative in a competitive sport, especially as an up-and-comer. The most battles happen at the bottom so I use old and new methods… Social Media, internet ads, constant interaction, online presence and guerrilla marketing. I’m outside, hand to hand, face to face, hanging posters, that’s my favorite way.
