I run with a 6-piece group. We go as Black Mountain Symphony, and it is a fiddle driven Rock-n-Roll band. But more important, we are friends and taking the time to speak the language of music with each other is something special in life.
When you’ve known a person for a long time, you get a sense of who they are and how they express themselves. And when you’ve known a musician for a long time, you get a sense of how they make choices and go down avenues that they have built through endless hours of practice and playing. Those choices can tell you a lot about a person’s heart and sensibilities. They tell you how they feel about themselves and how they feel about their heroes.
Playing with a live group is a gift that I give to myself. It’s the best kind of therapy. Life with take its toll and deal you hands that you can’t control. But if you make the time and open your heart and your ears, you can bond with others in a way that transcends words. You can create a space to let big and small things alike roll off your shoulders.
Tonight, some very old friends and I took the time to express ourselves to ourselves and that is a special thing.
