Steve Albini
Steve Albini, producer of a whole host of alternative albums including Nirvana’s “In Utero,” has died of a heart attack at 61. Albini’s approach was one of minimalism and simplicity, opting to capture natural voices and instruments rather than go all out like Phil Specter or Berry Gordy. And he preferred the term “engineer” to “producer.”
He started out his music career as the singer and guitarist in Big Black, making waves with the 1986 album “Atomizer” and the 1987 album “Songs About Fucking.”
Albini chose credit on albums over royalties, rare for producers. He was involved not only in “In Utero,” but also in LPs from The Pixies, The Breeders, POD, Melt Banana, The Jesus Lizard, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Gogol Bordello, and more. He also engineered the Jimmy Page and Robert Plant album Walking Into Clarksdale.
On the issue of royalties, Albini said, “I explained this to Kurt but I thought I’d better reiterate it here. I do not want and will not take a royalty on any record I record. No points. Period. I think paying a royalty to a producer or engineer is ethically indefensible. The band write the songs. The band play the music. It’s the band’s fans who buy the records.”
