Best Friends Girl Brings the Cars’ Legacy to Life at Cohoes Music Hall

While much of the Capital Region hunkered down against snow, ice, and biting winds on Saturday, February 15, about 200 devoted music fans braved the elements to experience Best Friends Girl, the premier Cars tribute band, at Cohoes Music Hall. Their dedication was well-rewarded with an electrifying and highly interactive performance that honored the music and energy of the legendary band.

Best Friends Girl has built a strong reputation for capturing the essence of the Cars, delivering faithful renditions of hits like “Just What I Needed,” “Drive,” and, of course, “My Best Friend’s Girl.” The Cohoes show was no exception, and despite the winter weather thinning the crowd, the band played as if it were a packed house.

One of the standout elements of the night was the band’s commitment to fan engagement. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist John Starr took audience interaction to a new level, stepping off the stage to mingle with the crowd, pose for selfies, and even make his way up to the balcony to ensure that those in the “cheap seats” felt just as much a part of the experience. This level of connection, combined with the band’s top-notch musicianship, made for a memorable night of music and nostalgia.

The current lineup of Best Friends Girl features:

John Starr – Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
Kevin Gallagher – Lead Guitar (a recent addition, but already proving to be a stellar fit)
Gary Bonneau – Bass
Mike Weber – Drums
Tom Wooley – Keyboards

Each musician contributed to the band’s signature sound, staying true to the polished yet edgy new wave style that made the Cars one of rock’s most beloved bands. Gallagher, despite being a newer member, impressed with his skillful lead guitar work, seamlessly integrating into the group’s dynamic energy.
