A Look Back: June 19

10 years ago: Train / The Fray / Matt Nathanson @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center
His shrill, but full, falsettos were exceptional–a level of singing rarely seen on recordings, and virtually never seen live. When Train played Aerosmith’s “Dream On” during their encore, Monahan’s singing was chill-inducing. The audience was left to decide for themselves how his voice compared to Steven Tyler’s. My personal verdict was that Tyler was the champion, but it was by a smaller margin than I would have thought.

Particularly nice surprises during the evening were the covers that the band rolled out during each set, including Fiona Apple’s “Sleep to Dream” and Beck’s “Black Tambourine,” both played as though the band had written them themselves, rather than some of the best songwriters of the past 20 years.

Classically trained Ms. Crow tore the house down when she played the harmonica with such exuberance and gusto. The crowd was in awe as a new voice of Sheryl Crow emerged. She jammed with the band for twenty minutes as the energy of the audience built with each harmonica note Sheryl hit.
