That Trio Delivers Big Sound in a Small Package
Words and Photography by Stephanie J Bartik.
I showed up early—so I thought—to photograph a show. I heard music as I left my car.
My first thought: “I’m late!” The male vocal was powerful, the rhythm locked in tight, and the vibe full and polished.
But when I rounded the corner, the main stage was empty.
When I heard music, I was expecting to catch the band at soundcheck.. Instead, I was greeted by rich, energetic music already spilling from the covered outdoor space behind the venue. I was stunned to see just three musicians on stage.
It was none other than That Trio, a surprising new offshoot from the popular full-band lineup of That 80s Band. On deck were Derek Montagne (guitar/vocals), Mike Bruce (drums), and Kevin Hodge (keys)—a powerhouse combo delivering nostalgia, groove, and musicianship with impressive depth for such a stripped-down format.
What struck me most was how full and dynamic the sound was. It didn’t feel like a smaller version of a larger band. It felt complete, intentional, and compelling in its own right. Fans cooling off in the shaded area were smiling, dancing, and singing along—it was clear that That Trio knew how to bring the party, even in the heat and humidity of an upstate New York summer evening.
A pleasant surprise, and one I hope to catch again soon. If you see That Trio on a lineup—don’t skip it. This isn’t a warm-up act; it’s a show in its own right.
