Caffe Lena – Week at a Glance

Greetings – Those of you who follow Caffe Lena on Facebook and Instagram will already know that one week ago today we had a heartbreaking loss when Joel Moss died quite unexpectedly. You can read his unofficial obituary in the Times Union, or his official obituary in any number of publications around the world. He was far and away our most famous and richly credentialed staff member, and also our best friend. Honestly, a whole lot of people thought of Joel as their best friend. We’re planning “Where The Music Never Dies: A Celebration of Joel Moss” for Tuesday, October 14, 5 – 9 PM. Gather with the crowd inside the Caffe and out on Phila Street for music, remembrances, and a reprise of some of Joel’s famous contributions to the world of music.

And another sad farewell: Carol Shippey died on September 10. Carol was a core member of the jam community and adult School of Music at Caffe Lena. Her gracious leadership has helped transform Caffe Lena into a clubhouse for anyone and everyone who can strum a few chords and appreciates what a treasure a circle of friends is. We are dedicating this Sunday’s Fiddles & Foliage Festival to Carol’s memory.

We all keep the music alive, whether we hold the door for newcomers, like Carol did, or we produce the songs that make up the soundtrack of our lives, like Joel did–or we simply choose going to the show over staying home. It all weaves together to create “a kinder, hopeful future–where music is the key.”*
