We (Sheena and I) arrived in Seattle late Sunday night, with one goal, to see a fantastic show. From the airport we took the light rail to our Airbnb to meet up with our friends Jen and Tim. We were all planning to go the next night to T-Mobile Park to see Green Day, featuring The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas. We stayed up late, excited to see our friends and go to this epic show. It was our first time in Seattle, so before the show we decided to pay our respects and go visit the home that Kurt Cobain had his life come to a early and tragic end.
There was some confusion on what time the show started, so in an unfortunate set of circumstances, we arrived a bit late and missed The first two bands. It was heartbreaking to have missed Rancid, one of my favorite bands. But soon after The Smashing Pumpkins took to the stage with all of the energy and power that they had 30 years ago. They delivered an amazing set, filled with high energy and even a little pro wrestling on stage to top it off. It was time for what we came for… Green Day was moments from performing.
The tour was celebrating the 30 year anniversary of their Dookie album, as well as the 20 year anniversary of their American Idiot album. The anticipation was intense. Their show started with some stage antics involving a giant bunny rabbit, after participation from the whole crowd in a beautiful sing along of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Green Day came in swinging with the force of a hurricane and broke into a new song from their latest album, Saviors. The stage went dark and then erupted with a massive mushroom cloud reminiscent of the Dookie album cover; they went into playing the album in it’s entirety. Every song played perfectly with incredible visuals and stage props, and Tre’ Cool finishing with his ever so hilarious secret song from Dookie, All By Myself.
After finishing the entire Dookie album, they proceeded to play some of their other hit songs, including Minority, and Brain Stew. Again the stage went dark, after a minute or two the stage once again erupted, this time the band having changed outfits and a hand with a heart shaped grenade towered over them. After playing the entire American Idiot album with amazing precision and beautiful stage effects, they proceeded to play several new songs and finished the show with the immortal ”Good Riddance” (Time of your Life) with Billie Joe Armstrong stopping a few bars short and busting out laughing at his fellow band mates shenanigans. This show was incredible from start to finish. Having seen Green Day for the first time at 13 years old, in 1995, and having seen them at least 4 other times over the last 29 years; I can honestly say that they are absolutely legends!
