YouTube Dentistry – The Weird Side of the Internet – by Liam Sweeny.

I’m a college student and have been one for twenty years. No, I’m not going for a Super Mega PhD, and no, I’m not a huge idiot who needs a handicap to get a 4.0 (golf handicap, not the other kind.) My university is online. My university is YouTube. Isn’t that everybody’s university these days? I read once (on a YouTube caption) that pretty much IT Help Desk is little more than people looking up a customer’s problem on Google, which, of course, will get them to YouTube.

But what about medicine? In particular, dentistry. Hell no, right? Wrong if you live in Havlickuv Brod, a town southeast of Prague, Czechoslovakia. There you can find a 22- year-old man has been practicing dentistry for two years without a license, or any formal medical training. In fact, it was his whole family, with only his wife working in healthcare, which means they had at least (stolen) anesthetics.

They did dozens of dental procedures using using online tutorials, like, say, Youtube videos, and they are each now facing eight years in prison for operating an illegal business, money laundering, attempted assault, drug dealing, and theft.

So I’m thinking they must have been doing a good job, right? They got away with it for two years. And they made four million Czech Koruma (around $200k. American.) And this is a terrible example, but how many jobs requiring licenses and advanced degrees could be done by just learning from YouTube. Because let’s face it; college is expensive. And I know, as one of those gifted kids growing up, I probably learned more about the world from museum trips with my dad and the encyclopedia set he bought the house that I may have learned in class.

Maybe the new singularity will be when YouTube starts to offer a free college. In fact, in many cases, they already are.
