This is Jesse Sample. Do you ever think about what you’ll be like in twenty years? Thirty years? Assuming we make it a couple more decades, how will we change? How will the world change? Will those young whipper snappers be cruising around on those forever promised hover boards? Our bodies will be older, but will our emotional worlds will be more complex? How will you find comfort as the people you know depart this world?
I’d like to be an old man who laughs a lot. Laughter is a way to shed light on what can be sometimes dark situations. I like old folks who can laugh. Surely, life will take its toll, but some people can still find the punch line. The old people that I like, laugh as though they’re young.
I’d like to further myself as a guitar player and an artist in general. New compositions offer fresh takes on my inner world. There are plenty of disciplines and styles to study within the field of guitar playing. These are all pathways to adventure. Change in perspective and fresh technical pursuit are all part of a healthy artist’s life. When we study new things and find new masters, our world becomes deeper.
Some of these things I can control. Life offers plenty of situations where laughter is absolutely the right response. And I can take lessons in different art forms and go on journeys into strange new musical worlds.
But the thing I want most for my future self is something I can’t control. Friends. They are the people that you meet along the way. They are the people that can see the sides of you that even you can’t see. Those relationships are what gives life meaning.
And here I am in the present, thinking to myself, I really want other old guys around to talk shit with while we sit in the park and watch pretty girls jog by. I want my wife around to instill the right amount of terror that keeps a house clean. I’d like the wordless communication that I have with my siblings and my closest friends. We can’t control how long we get to keep these ties. And that makes them precious.
