Cohoes, NY — Get ready for an electrifying theatrical experience as Aaron Sorkin’s iconic courtroom drama A Few Good Men comes to life at Cohoes Music Hall. Directed by Aaron Holbritter, co-founder of Creative License, this gripping production runs from January 31st to February 9th, and was originally announced with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM. Due to swift ticket demand, Creative License and the Music Hall have added two additional performances on Saturdays, Feb. 1 and 8, at 2pm. That’s a total of 8 chances to see this highly anticipated show.

This production boasts a talented cast of some of the region’s top-tier local talent, bringing to life Sorkin’s fast-paced dialogue and compelling characters. The cast of sixteen is filled with Creative License stalwarts like Tom Templeton (Kaffee) Ian LaChance (Kendrick) and David Quinones, JR (Ross) who are joined by company newcomers Shawn Morgan (Jessep), Meaghan Rogers (Jo) and Nellson Jacobs-Moore (Markinson). With Holbritter’s keen directorial vision, this version of A Few Good Men promises to deliver the tension, drama, and insight that have made it one of the most revered works of contemporary American theater.
About the Play: A Few Good Men takes us into the heart of a military courtroom drama, where young Navy lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee is assigned the case of defending two Marines accused of murder. As Kaffee digs deeper, he uncovers a web of military secrets and codes of conduct that threaten to tear apart not only the lives of the accused but the entire military hierarchy. Country Star Chris Stapleton has announced the “All American Road Show” tour dates for 2025. Brittney Spencer, Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs, Nikki Lane, War & Treaty, and Maggie Rose will take turns opening.

The tour begins worldwide in Australia in February, but new shows in America will be starting in June in Greenville, South Carolina, in addition to dates in St. Louis, New York City, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Denver, and more. Billy Joel, fresh off of his residency in Madison Square Garden, still has plans to play in New York, hitting MetLife stadium in East Rutherford, NJ in August with Stevie Nicks, and he’s announced that before that, in July, he plans on playing Yankee Stadium with Rod Stewart. It’s a one night only show. You can get tickets in the general sale on January 17th, with different presales on the 14th at 10AM.

Bob Mould has announced his new album and a tour with Craig Finn. The new album is titled ‘Here We Go Crazy,’ and it’s his 15th solo album. It’s also his first in over 4 years, and will come out on March 7th through Granary Music / BMG.

“On the surface, this is a group of straightforward guitar pop songs,” Bob says. “I’m refining my primary sound and style through simplicity, brevity, and clarity. Under the hood, there’s a number of contrasting themes. Control and chaos, hypervigilance and helplessness, uncertainty and unconditional love.”

The tour kicks of in NYC on May 3rd. Tickets for the tour will go on sale today at 10 AM local time.

On Friday, January 3, 2025, the historic Strand Theatre in Hudson Falls, NY, came alive with Kristofferson – A Live Tribute Concert Event, an unforgettable evening celebrating the life and music of the legendary Kris Kristofferson. Following his passing in September 2024 after a prolonged battle with Lyme disease, Marc Vincent created a stellar lineup of local talent to honor Kristofferson’s immeasurable contributions to music and storytelling.

Kristofferson, a cornerstone of the Outlaw Country movement, was renowned for his deeply personal songwriting and unmistakable gravelly voice. His timeless music, including classics like “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” captured the raw essence of the human experience. Beyond shaping the sound of country music, his artistry transcended genres, resonating with fans around the globe.

The tribute featured captivating performances by some of the region’s most celebrated artists:

Al & Cathy Bain, Michael Eck, Orion Kribs & Keanen Stark, Chris Wiski, Lucas Garrett, Marc Delgado, Jonathan and Jennifer Newell, Johnny Clifford, Jeff Sohn, Bob Tressler, Ed Jahn, Carla Metz, Mike Kelley, and the Bluebillies: Mel Guarino, Mark Guarino, and Greg Bucking.

And special guests: Ayla Riley, Tania Susi, Megan Houde, and national touring artist Laura Roth.

Each artist brought their unique style to Kristofferson’s iconic songs, blending heartfelt passion with unparalleled artistry.

The Strand Theatre’s warm acoustics and intimate ambiance elevated the evening. Video projections of pivotal moments from Kristofferson’s illustrious career added depth and nostalgia to the performances. Artists also shared personal stories of how his music impacted their lives, creating a truly immersive and emotional experience.

The audience, a mix of devoted fans and newcomers, hung on every note, united in their appreciation for the man whose legacy continues to inspire. With its blend of music, storytelling, and camaraderie, the concert became more than a tribute—it was a testament to the enduring power of Kristofferson’s work.

Special recognition is also due to the behind-the-scenes team who made the event possible: Stephanie J. Bartik, Stephanie Revely, Ken Clute, Evan Newell, Mary Ellen Barlow, and the dedicated volunteers at the Strand. Their efforts ensured the evening was as seamless as it was magical.

Plans are already underway for another tribute concert around the one-year anniversary of Kris Kristofferson’s passing. The event is slated for September, with dates to be announced this spring.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (Jan. 14) — Universal Preservation Hall is proud to announce the seventh class of inductees into the prestigious Capital Region Thomas Edison Music Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees celebrate diverse musical genres and contributions to the Capital Region’s thriving music scene. The class of 2025 includes Brian Melick, Charlene Shortsleeve, Dan Berggren, Emerald City, SIRSY, Stony Creek Band, The Clay People and The Sharks.

Since its inception in 2019, the Eddies Hall of Fame has honored 48 individuals and groups whose artistry and dedication have enriched the cultural fabric of the Capital Region. This year’s inductees span the fields of world music, folk, pop-rock, country and metal punk, while also recognizing a legendary nightlife curator whose impact on the local music scene is immeasurable. The 2025 ceremony will be in the Great Hall at UPH 6 p.m. Monday, March 24. The ceremony is open to the public and includes musical performances that will be announced later, a social hour, videos on the musical career of each inductee and acceptance speeches.

Brian Melick, an internationally acclaimed percussionist, has been captivating audiences with his innovative techniques and dedication to the craft of world music since the early age of 13. Featured recording artist on over 450 commercially released recordings to date on independent as well as major labels, his passion for rhythm and education has made him a standout figure both locally and beyond.

Charlene Shortsleeve, a legendary nightlife curator of the notorious 288 Lark, has been instrumental in shaping the Capital Region’s entertainment landscape, and fostering vibrant live music experiences that have resonated with audiences across generations. She was the founder of QE2 nightclub, which became the heart of Albany’s punk, alt-rock, industrial, goth and poetry scene featuring artists such as Sonic Youth, 10,000 Maniacs, Marilyn Manson, the Wallflowers, Allen Ginsberg and Jim Carroll.

Dan Berggren’s celebrated career as a folk artist is deeply rooted in the storytelling traditions of the Adirondacks. His songs, rich with history and heart, have connected listeners to the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Emerald City, a dynamic pop-rock band, became a staple of local stages with their unforgettable melodies and electrifying performances, leaving an indelible mark on the Capital Region’s music scene. Known for their eclectic blend of rock, pop and soulful grooves, the band earned a reputation for electrifying performances that captivated audiences across the East Coast through 1981.

SIRSY, the powerhouse duo of Melanie Krahmer and Rich Libutti, has built a national following with their high-energy performances and heartfelt lyrics. Their innovative blend of pop and rock continues to inspire fans far and wide. Mel and Rich started making music in 2000 and since then have toured for a living-playing 200 shows yearly all over the US and Canada.

Stony Creek Band, with its timeless country and folk sound, has fostered a deep connection with its audience through decades of dedication and artistry. For over 50 years, they have been one of the most enduringly popular musical groups in the northeastern United States.

The Clay People, a groundbreaking group known for their electrifying fusion of metal and punk, have pushed creative boundaries and earned a loyal fanbase locally and nationally. Their live shows continue producing an ever-evolving sound canon with creative fervor— noted readily by their rabid fan base which grows steadily as The Clay People continue to produce groundbreaking projects with creative fervor.

The Sharks, a pop-rock favorite of the Capital Region, remain a beloved part of the community’s musical history, their enduring contributions leaving an indelible legacy. Unlike many bands of the time, the Sharks were a seven-piece group featuring a three-piece horn section. Audiences were filling clubs to hear bands performing their own material and The Sharks were proud to be counted among them.

“The Capital Region’s vibrant music scene has long been a cornerstone of our creative community, and the Eddies Hall of Fame celebrates the remarkable individuals who have shaped its legacy,” said Kelly Auricchio, Eddies producer. “This year’s inductees represent the diversity and depth of the scene, and we’re honored to help shine a spotlight on the talent and passion that continue to make our region a musical powerhouse.”

I’ve had a weird thought, and I’m sure it’s unpopular, but I think that, so long as nobody gets hurt, and restitutions are made, the originality of the crime should be a factor in the sentencing. Like the judge should be allowed to knock a few months off if the crime was entertaining. And you know if I’m talking about it here, it was entertaining.

A bear broke into a Rolls Royce Ghost and ransacked it. It was caught on tape, as were two similar ransackings of Mercedeses (Mercedeses? Does that sound right?) Anyway, so three bear attacks on luxury cars, three ransackings, and three insurance claims, worth a combined $140,000.

Of course, they didn’t believe this sh*t for a second. They watched the video, and called California Fish and Wildlife, and apparently, bears make much more of a mess that the meat claws you can find in the kitchen of a restaurant. Also bears usually aren’t dexterous enough to slither in the back seat from the front seat.

Also, brown bears haven’t been in California in a century.

A guy in a bear suit. Yup, just a guy in a bear suit, ransacking luxury cars for the insurance claims. They basically said they had never heard anyone do anything like this before. Of course they haven’t.

That should be a whole division of crimes. In Montana and Tennessee, bears were falsely accused for killing folks. But it seems like just about every crime could be better done by the criminal being in a bear costume. It’s so wild, you’d probably get away with it. When Gotti had Paul Castellano killed, he had all the shooters wear babushkas, because that’s all people would remember.

Same principle.

Would you buy your drugs by a bear in the back alleys of Peoria? If you saw a bear walking down the street in a mink fur trench coat and a diamond tipped cane, would you have his money?

An Interview with Jason Bittner, Drummer of Category 7 and Shadows Fall

One of the top metal drummers of today is a local favorite – Jason Bittner!

Since his early days with Shadows Fall in 2001, Bittner has emerged to become one of metal’s top drummers. A former student at the Berklee College of Music, Bittner has played with several rock and metal groups, and his abilities behind the kit pushed him to new heights with stints in notable bands like Toxik, Flotsam & Jetsam, and more recently, Overkill.

When it was announced that he had co-created a new metal band with veterans such as Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head), Jack Gibson (Exodus), Mike Orlando (Adrenaline Mob) and singer John Bush (Armored Saint), I was admittedly an instant fan. That quintet, Category 7, released their debut in 2024 to widespread fan and critical acclaim, highlighted with anthems like “Exhausted,” and “Mousetrap,” and “Apple of Discord.”

The success of Category 7 and what Bittner has referred to online as his co-ownership of the band, as well as the return of Shadows Fall, ultimately forced him to exit Overkill after two powerful albums (including 2023’s Scorched, a standout in their discography).

We talk about standout songs and albums from Bittner’s impressive body of work and what it’s like to be behind the kit for a superb metal group that is not a “supergroup.” We also learn a bit about his musical philosophies and contributions to an upcoming album from a rising metal unit out of California, Becoming.

Recap: Doom Dogs at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall 1/8/2025

I (Rob Smittix) have been very much looking forward to Doom Dogs at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall ever since I heard the announcement. In preparation for the performance I interviewed all 3 members of Doom Dogs which you can check out here:

On Wednesday January 8th, I finally got to witness the super-group for myself. This was part of the Lift Concert Series which is a unique experience in itself. The Lift series allows fans to sit on the stage with the band as they perform, creating an almost interactive but definitely an intimate concert experience. I made sure to get an isle seat as I am one to frequently get up to refresh my beverage or use the facilities. That’s what happens when you get to be my age lol.

Let me remind you that no two Doom Dogs shows are exactly the same as the band improvises their entire set. Our photographer Stephanie J. Bartik was given the standard photo instructions for a concert, no flash and she was allowed to shoot the first three songs. Well, I had to laugh because after they played for 20 mins it became apparent that they were just jamming and there was no way to tell when a song has ended or started. I whispered to Reeve’s wife Susan that it was funny that we had the 3 song rule and she responded “Yeah, it’s all one really long song.”

I believe that to a couple of audience members that I probably appeared to be inebriated but that wasn’t the case. I did bring my Troy Savings Bank Music Hall cup but I was just filling it with water from the water cooler. The reason I believe that I looked intoxicated to a few people seated in the back was because when I got up to refill my cup, I turned around to exit the stage seating area and realized there was a TV camera filming; I thought that I may have been obstructing their view. Instead of continuing forward I dipped to the right thinking there was room for me to walk around these few seats, however I almost took a step off of the stage. Yeah that looked pretty stupid I’m sure, but I also think that those that witnessed this, probably wondered what I was on. My eyes were adjusting to the light change and I most likely should make an eye appointment. Here’s a fun fact I haven’t had a drink since New Year’s Eve.

I did however smoke some grade A quality cannabis right before I walked into the music hall. The music that came out of Doom Dogs that night fell into the psychedelic realm. I almost wished that I was tripping but the music itself took me on an adventure. At times during the show I decided to close my eyes and just let the music take me away. So if I had one word to describe the show it would be “journey.” And no not Steve Perry’s Journey but rather a journey that we all took together as the music morphed before our very eyes and ears. Doom Dogs is an experience that you will not get anywhere else.

It’s not a matter of IF but rather WHEN you get the opportunity to see these guys do their thing, don’t let that opportunity slip away. Even though the core audience for this show was on the stage, there was a good amount of overflow in the regular theater seating. Three quarters of the way through the show, Reeve’s looks out to the theater crowd and says, “woah, when did you get here?” Haha what a great night!

Lez Zeppelin-All Girls. All Zeppelin. Lez Zeppelin is a phenomenon. Unlike the typical “tribute band” Lez Zeppelin does not seek to imitate. Rather, they are a she-incarnation of the original. With swagger, intensity, and virtuosity these four women cover the entire canon, performing hits, deep tracks, epic compositions,and acoustic numbers with utmost authenticity, as if they’d written the music themselves. Formed in Averill Park, NY, 10:01 is an alternative-rock group that combines a modern indie sound with influences in rock and blues. They play an eclectic set of covers and original songs, including one of their singles “Janey Girl” which has gathered over 850,000 streams. Made up of Zach Ryan, Louie Reale, Greg Effman, and Harry Corbin, the 4-piece is not something you want to miss!

Canadian singer-songwriter, flutist, and nationally acclaimed traditional singer Allison Lupton enchants listeners with ballads and tunes reminiscent of an earlier time. Allison is now touring her album “Words of Love,” along with heavy hitters– Canadian and US Grand National fiddle champion Shane Cook and CFMA Solo Instrumental Artist of the Year and Canadian Grand Master Step Dance champion Kyle Waymouth. Together their live show is a glorious mix of beautiful story songs, electrifying fiddle tunes and dazzling step dance united by the trio’s warm and frequently humourous stage presence. Cesar Soto – An Xperience Interview – by Rachael Skinner.

Internationally acclaimed and exceptionally skilled guitarist and musician Cesar Soto, hailing from Los Angeles, CA– has collaborated with a diverse array of remarkable bands over the course of his musical career. Some of his notable collaborations include Ministry, Pissing Razors,The Sixth, Years of Cold, Tides of Titan and is actively performing and creating music with his eccentric metal/grunge band Man the Mute.

RRX: What is your earliest memory of realizing your passion for wanting to play guitar?

CS: My brother gave me my first guitar when I was 9 yrs old and it inspired me to play.

RRX: Who/what are your influences on your eclectic guitar technique and creative processes?

CS: Having no boundaries and whatever comes naturally, even if it means not a traditional technique. Freedom is my technique.

RRX: What were some of the first projects you were a part of and how did that shape your style today?

CS: In the late 90s I joined Pissing Razors and it taught me comradery and about adapting to all situations that arise on the road and in the studio.

RRX: How did the universe align the paths of you and the creative force of Ministry?

CS: I was asked to audition in late 2014, learned multiple sets, and started touring February of 2015. Felt meant to be.

RRX: Describe the feeling of having the opportunity to be a part of the industrial magic that is Ministry?

CS: It was an amazing opportunity and goal that I worked hard to be a part of. Playing some of my favorite songs I grew up listening to. And even more mind-blowing to be part of Ministry for over 10 years now!

RRX: What is your most cherished moments with Ministry – whether it be in the studio or on tour?

CS: My most memorable moment was playing my first show with the band in Australia in front of 40,000 people. The only request Al had was to not freak out, and thank God I didn’t.

RRX: I read that Ministry will be performing at the 2025 Sick New World Tour in Las Vegas– what are you most anticipating about this tour? Are there any bands in particular that you are eager/excited to perform with?

CS: It’s always nice to play a festival with some of your favorite bands. I’m particularly excited to watch Metallica and Gojira on the same night. It’s also great to see and reconnect with friends in some of those bands.

RRX: Can you elaborate on your decision to merge forces with Jackson Guitars?

CS: After offers from multiple guitar companies, I just felt that Jackson was my home to begin with. Their guitars are beyond solid and beautiful. Not to mention the best artist relations out there thanks to Mike Tempesta.

RRX: Can you describe your experience of meeting the legendary guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott? What is your favorite memory from that evening?

CS: So many experiences to mention but the one thing that always stood out was how good and equal he treated everyone. He did once tell me, “you’re a great guitar player, play more solos! You got it in you” I have so many stories from years of run ins and shows that ended up in epic hangs.

RRX: Describe to me how the universe lead you to establish your band Man the Mute and how is this musical endeavor is meaningful to you?

CS: I started compiling years of ideas that I had on my phone of random riffs that were not intended for Ministry and when the pandemic hit, it gave me the time and opportunity to start putting songs together that I felt represented who I am as a musician. It was also a challenge that I was willing to take by writing, recording and performing everything on my album. It was a great sense of accomplishment.

RRX: What was your inspiration behind creating your single “Willow”?

CS: That is a long story but in a nutshell, Willow is about a message that I received from someone who had passed for one of their loved ones that was a stranger to me at the time. It was based on that entire experience and I believe it was meant to help that person heal.

RRX: What was the creative process like creating your full length album “Songs For Peace, Songs for War.”? Do you have any behind the scenes details you would like to share with us?

CS: Every single song came to me with absolutely no effort, almost as I was guided by a higher power. The album was recorded in my home studio and had a lot to do with stages of my life at the time.

RRX: Do you have anything you wish to share pertaining to Man the Mute? Any plans for a tour or album?

CS: There are no plans for tour as of yet but I plan to bring Man The Mute to life in a live setting and I am actually working on a second album.

RRX: Do you have any other musical or artistic endeavors or projects that you wish you share?

CS: I try to stay busy mixing and helping others bring their musical projects to life.

RRX: What is your personal definition of success and what does it mean to you?

CS: My personal definition of success is being happy doing what you’re doing at whatever level you are at. As long as you are at peace doing what you are doing, that’s really all that matters.

RRX: Life constantly carves out new routes for us to explore, and on these journeys, we encounter chances to learn and grow. What is the most significant lesson you have discovered throughout your personal life journey?

CS: Adapt. Just adapt to everything that comes to you in life. Make the best of it.
