Antje Duvekot – Women’s Voices Concert Series, The Linda, Albany, 8pm
with special guest Girl Love.
Former Rolling Stone music editor Dave Marsh says: “This is a brilliant, brilliant album. I have had this reaction once in the last 10 years and that was the first time I heard Patty Griffin.”
Antje Duvekot has solidified her reputation as one of Boston’s top singer songwriters with “Big Dream Boulevard” her debut studio release and “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia” her follow-up albums. The debut CD was produced by Seamus Egan, founder of the Irish super group, SOLAS and the project was released on songwriter Ellis Paul’s label and quickly attracted international attention for Antje. It was voted “#1 Folk Release of 2006” by the Boston Globe and was named to the “Top10 Releases of the Year” by National Public Radio’s, Folk Alley. Her follow up albums “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia” were produced by Richard Shindell and along side with Richard feature other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli.

Captain Fun Listening Hour, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, Noon-1pm
May Music Presented by
Michael Lambert / 5-26-23
June: Women’s Music
from the 70s & 80s / 6-30-23
All are welcome to gather at Lena’s from Noon to 1 PM on the last Friday of each month to enjoy musical memories and new discoveries. The playlist is selected by a different community member each month from the Captain Fun Listening Library of vinyl records in Lena’s lobby. Chuck “Rochmon” Vosganian spins the records and gets the conversation flowing. Bring a brown bag lunch. Coffee and tea are provided.
The Captain Fun Listening Library occupying the north wall in the Caffè Lena lobby is comprised of 1,516 vinyl albums and several hundred CDs selected from Al “Captain Fun” McKenney’s expertly curated collection. This treasure trove of folk, blues and jazz was left us in 2015 and we share it through our monthly listening hour, as Al wished. Enjoy the memories these records bring back, and dig deep into American roots music.
The Eastern Highs, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 8pm-10pm
Take a sonic trip with these bluesy, jazzy, dream-pop rock ’n roll craftsmen, with a rich synergistic musical chemistry
Get elevated by the lush soundscape of The Eastern Highs! The group, comprised of pianist and vocalist Kirk Juhas, guitarist Chris Sullivan, bassist Ken Juhas and drummer Greg Nash combine classic and modern sounds that owe as much to the roots/Americana flavor of The Band and Wilco as it does the cosmic sounds of some of rock’s leading sonic architects like Pink Floyd and Radiohead. Inspired by Nina Simone, The Beatles, Johnny Cash and other roots and soul-based artists, The Eastern Highs bring a sound that is focused on strong songwriting with touches of alternative, soul & folk influences. Collectively, they have performed with the likes of Moe., Jewel, Derek Trucks, P-Funk, John Medeski, Les Claypool, David Grisman, Rusted Root, Method Man and Bob Weir. Musically, the band bridges a broad map that links diverse influences from classic jazz to dream-pop. Kirk Juhas’ bluesy, tenacious voice translates complex emotions into heartfelt lyrics. Sullivan on guitar unleashes a distinct roar that is both clean and dirty, earthy and stratospheric. The tight rhythm section of bass and drums can dig in on a deep-grooved pocket one minute, before launching the band into an auditory exploration the next. Throw in a jazz vibe, straightforward songwriting and a touch of whimsy, and you have an experience that is uniquely The Eastern Highs. One fan raves: “The harmonies and melodies are absolutely fantastic. This sh** just makes you wanna crank the speakers as high as they’ll go!!”

Pretty Much the Best Comedy Show – Jim Tews, Proctors Theatre, Schenectady, 8pm
Jim Tews was born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard after high school and was stationed in Cleveland where he started stand-up comedy. After completing his enlistment and going to college, he moved to New York City to work as a comedian and writer. When the pandemic hit, while stuck inside, Jim taught himself to animate. Jim has performed all over the U.S., and even in a few foreign countries. He’s been a part of several notable comedy festivals including San Francisco Sketchfest and Just For Laughs Montreal. His two live albums debuted in the top three comedy titles on the iTunes charts, and both receive regular play on satellite radio. He’s appeared on NBC, FX, and more. The Slambovian Circus of Dreams – Unplugged!, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 8pm-10:30pm
Explore the depths of Americana one trippy tune at a time with Woodstock-tinged psychedelia, southern rock, roots, folk + blues – unplugged!
Where exactly is Slambovia? Maybe it’s an island that lived in David Bowie’s head. Maybe it’s an archipelago floating in Leonard Cohen’s retired pen. Wherever it is, Caffè Lena invites you to take a peek behind the Slambovian Curtain and experience the creative engine behind the band in this rare and intimate “unplugged” performance by the founding members. Voted “Best Band of 2022” in their home state of New York by Chronogram Magazine, Charismatic frontman, Joziah presides center-ring with vocals that are as soothing and bewitching as a snake oil tonic, joined onstage by founding bandmates Tink (accordion, cello, mandolin, flute) and the guitar-slinging skills of Sharkey McEwen. Hear rarely performed songs with elements of Dylan, Bowie, Incredible String Band, Syd Barrett and The Waterboys, from their deep catalog, and from their latest project A Very Unusual Head – among the “Best Albums of 2022” according to Rock’n’Reel Magazine, UK.“Like a snowball full of heart and unabashed beauty with songs of hope and resistant joy” (Jambase.com), Slambovia may not be on a map, but you can still visit the Circus of Dreams on May 27. Something surreal this way comes!
Airiel / Laveda / Cørdyceps, No Fun, Troy, 7pm-11pm
Airiel – https://airiel.bandcamp.com
Active since the late ’90s, Airiel’s ambitious brand of spacy, wistful dream pop has earned a small but dedicated following. The Chicago-based group’s lush washes of effects-heavy guitars and yearning vocals bring to mind U.K. shoegaze acts like Kitchens of Distinction and Ride as well as American indie songwriters like Bob Mould.
Laveda – https://lavedamusic.bandcamp.com
Genre blending dream pop/rock outfit Laveda set nostalgic and cinematic moods with a 90’s-esque sound reminiscent of The Sundays and My Bloody Valentine. Unlike popular bands of the shoegaze revival movement, Laveda maintain polished pop vocal performances similar to artists such as Beach House and Billie Eilish.
