Griffin House, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 8pm-10pm
A Nashville-based musician with a Midwestern upbringing, Griffin House bought his first guitar for $100 from a friend, then turned down a golf scholarship to Ohio University and instead went to Miami University where he taught himself how to play guitar and write songs. Inspired by Bruce Springsteen, Woody Guthrie, and the Mermaid Avenue albums by Wilco and Billy Bragg, House embraced the craft of songwriting and issued several albums as an independent artist. His mix of sentimental melodies, ambient guitars, and sparse arrangements attracted attention from Nettwerk, a Vancouver-based record label, and House soon partnered with the label’s American branch to issue Lost & Found in 2004. Several self-released albums followed, and House signed with RCA before issuing Flying Upside Down, a folk-rock album recorded with members of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers. (AllMusic)
House spikes his pop/rock songwriting with a dose of rootsy, atmospheric Americana. He has shared the stage with artists such as Ron Sexsmith, Patti Scialfa, Josh Ritter, John Mellencamp, Mat Kearney, and The Cranberries. American Songwriter raves, “If you are looking to be blown away by raw talent, then look no further than Griffin House.”

Mazel Tov Cocktail Party!, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 7pm-9pm
Mazel Tov Cocktail Party! (a “good vibes explosion”) celebrates our shared humanity with a multi-generational, multi-ethnic group of collaborators that embrace the diversity of today’s America through their unique take on a multitude of traditional roots music. Featured on shows such as NPR’s Morning Edition & France’s RFI Sessions Live, Mazel Tov Cocktail Party was created in response to the current climate of polarization that pervades our daily lives. In these uncertain times, it’s a chance to come together to celebrate our common humanity and foster joy, positivity, and togetherness. Mazel Tov Cocktail Party has received rave reviews across North America and Europe: France’s Le Monde says: “Mazel Tov Cocktail Party is a breath of fresh air, an incentive to dance … In the face of the overwhelming negativity and alarming rise of hatred and intolerance in today’s world, let’s breathe and dance together … More than a suggestion, an injunction” Roots World says: “An informal cocktail party typically lasts a few hours, and this one ends all too soon. 5 stars”
Mazel Tov Cocktail Party has performed at venues that include Paris’ famed 2000-seater Theatre du Chatelet and Viena’s Porgy & Bess Club, and in venues large and small in France, Holland, Austria, and the USA. Conceived and created by Grammy-nominated “ebullient clarinet wizard” (Time Out NY) David Krakauer and multi-instrumentalist/producer Kathleen Tagg, Mazel Tov Cocktail Party showcases an international crew of high-octane musicians. Krakauer is the Godfather to Tagg’s quirky keys & production, Iranian dynamo Martin Shamoonpour’s hand drumming, jazz guru Jerome Harris’ driving bass, rapper Sarah MK’s trenchant rhymes & oud-and guitar-meister Yoshie Fruchter’s sinuous lines. In addition, Jeremy Flower, Socalled and Selwa Abd (aka Bergsonist) produced beats to round out the sound for layering with the live performance. Together they bring their enormous musical and cultural diversity to the project and collaborate to create powerful original material. Old forms are celebrated both by bringing them into a 21st century sound world and expanding the context to make room for new stories. Mazel Tov Cocktail Party’s influences are global, but the sound they create collectively has produced something uniquely their own. Familiar dance forms such as Polka or Square Dance never sounded this way before, with hand drumming, propulsive electronic beats, lyrics calling for catharsis and positivity, deep grooves and Krakauer’s wailing clarinet crying out for us to join together, celebrate and feel the power in our aliveness.
