Karina Rhykman – Putnam Place – Photos – by Tammie Birdwell.

On a super-chilly Thursday evening on November 2nd, The 518 was once again blessed with a visit from Karina Rhykman at Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs. Unlike Karina, whose career I have followed for years, Coyote Island was new to me. I hadn’t heard them before.

It’s honestly a good thing it was so cold outside because it was on fire up on that stage.

Even though I was using brand-new gear, and I couldn’t work my cameras very well for a while, I still truly enjoyed the Coyote Island set. Their incredible energy and unique sound broke through my stress and fear — I highly recommend that you check them out if you haven’t already. Trust me if they can break through that kind of anxiety, it seems like a decent band to add to all of your playlists.

True story: one of my cameras was taking a video and I didn’t even know there was a button for it. The other photographer had to show me how to turn it off. Feel free to laugh, I certainly am — now. As you can see in the gallery below, despite my struggles, I think I did okay. If you were at the show and I bumped you or seemed rude, let me go ahead and say I am very sorry I was on the struggle bus there for a few.

I had figured things out somewhat by the time Karina Rhyman took the stage, thankfully. I knew we were in for a treat and I wasn’t wrong — Karina is a powerhouse. She is a force of nature and with her on her bass accompanied by a guitarist and a drummer, they blew the roof off the place. Look closely at the photo gallery, she is levitating in one of my shots.

Take a look at the full gallery below and for God’s sake, don’t sleep on seeing Coyote Island or Karina Rhykman live.
