Avery Coffin – Interview – A Hot Minute – by Liam Sweeny.
RRX: We let it out differently when we play music. The happy, sad, good and back; it can all be put out musically. Overall, do you feel better when you sing about the better times, or the worser times? Is there a difference you can describe?
AC: Music has always been an escape for me, a home, my safe place. I titled my previous album “Welcome Home” because a home is somewhere you’re comfortable, where you relax and feel at peace, where your family is and the love should be. In my home growing up I dealt with a lot so I ran to music and creating to find those things..the happy, the sad…no matter the feelings I had when I wrote them down and created, it put me in a safe place, it gave me an overwhelming feeling of peace and accomplishment. It still does to this day. Being able to feel something and verbalize it in a rhyming format is extremely powerful and has gotten me through some of my worst days and helped me truly experience some of my best days.
RRX: Creative people move culture, especially musical performers. We have to thread the circumstances in our lives in a way to affect others. And this is sometimes a responsibility put on us. How do you, specifically, move culture?
AC: I feel as if I move the culture by being myself. Speaking my truths and allowing the masses to relate to things I’ve felt or gone through. Our stories are unique in their own way but so many other people have also dealt with similar triumphs and defeats, trials and tribulations…the relatability in our music helps the people in our culture feel as if they’re not the only ones who are going through what they’re going through or have gone through. It gives a sense of unity, understanding, comfort and acceptance.
RRX: With services like Spotify, streaming revenue can be pretty dismal. Without spilling secrets, do you have a promotional mindset or philosophy?
AC: Yea, and it’s simple it’s called consistency. I don’t care how talented you are, if you work hard and you consistently work at your craft and consistently put out music you will eventually break through or make some kind of money from your talent. Inconsistency is what stops that from happening for most artists
RRX: In the musical world, there are many supporting players. Recording engineers, sound techs, cover art designers. Who are three people that support the craft that you would like to shine a spotlight at?
AC: I would like to definitely shine the spotlight on a good friend of mine who owns his own videography company Donte Beenz. Incredible human and phenomenal work ethic. Super talented dude and it’s always an honor to work with him. Go link with him for your next music video! Magic at OWO studios is also a super talented recording engineer and recorded/mixed my entire last album, shout out to him and everyone at OWO studios! Last but definitely not least I would like to shout out my Cousin David Harris (Champ) without him recording me for free my whole life, doing my cover art, production, music videos…I mean literally everything, I would not be the artist I am today. He is one of the most talented humans I’ve ever met and have been highly blessed to work with him since a young age!
RRX: Would you rather have one of your songs blow up and make you a one-hit wonder and household name, or would you rather have all your songs be solidly received, but no chart-climbers?
AC: I would rather have one of my songs blow up to be honest. I feel as I’m intelligent enough to steer the ship in the right direction once I become a household name and create other opportunities outside of music to build generational wealth for me and my family. I’d rather have one song heard by 100 million people and make a difference in that number of lives than 100 songs heard by one person.
RRX: Let’s talk about your next project, your next few. Just not the ones you’re working on now. The ones you have your eyes on for the future. What’s coming to us?
AC: Before I answer this I just want to say God is good all the time and all the glory goes to him and my savior Jesus Christ. I will be bringing some incredible visuals to you very soon. Stories that musically and visually shift the culture. I’ve tried to be pragmatic in my approach but it’s time I start flooding the internet and social media sites with everything I’ve worked so hard on. I have a music video to a song called “Quit Rap” that me and Donte Beenz are about to shoot and release (extremely excited for that project) a new album being created and I will also be jumping back in the ring of battle rap and showcasing my talents there! Watch out for visuals to songs like “Amazing Grace” “Co-Parent” and “Everyday is Christmas” as well! 2024 is going to be an exciting year! I hope all my fans are as excited as I am.
