Week Twenty-Six: Jesse Sample’s Freak of the Week. “Shoulda had my own back.”

This is Jesse Sample. All our lives, we’ve been hearing the phrase “You have to love yourself.” But what they didn’t tell us was how to express it in a way where we would believe it. This is something that I would and will spend my whole life trying to grasp.

We have a general idea of what it means to be a good spouse or a good friend. We have a rough concept of what a good family member is and how they behave. But the road to being a good steward to oneself is not often clear, especially to us.

When we damage the world around us, we tell ourselves something very specific about ourselves. We feed our inner self bad food and tell them that they aren’t worth good food…And they believe us.

The path to being kind to oneself is not always obvious but I’m starting to get the impression that it often runs parallel to being kind to others. The people in our lives could be access points to our truest selves.
