Snacks and Zaps – The Weird Side of the Internet – by Liam Sweeny.

It’s not always light. Sometimes the cool thing is surrounded by sad stuff, so an errant joke is in poor taste, but it must be told. In this case, what must be told is the story of Bill Brucks. Bill’s a hero in this story. His is also a tragic story.

See, it all started with a storm. According to Brucks, it wasn’t an ordinary storm. It got to his neighborhood a tempest, and it rained a deluge when the thunder and lightning broke. Brucks was in his house with his 93 year-old mother Marilyn. He went to the kitchen to get a tasty snack. I think that’s what he was doing, you know, he probably doesn’t remember himself because as soon as he grabbed the door, everything went white and kablamo! He ends up flying across the kitchen, hits the floor.

I said he was the hero of this story. He is because the moment he got up, his first thought was getting his mother out of the house, which was at that point on fire from the lightning strike. He had help from his neighbor and they got out, all of them.

I said it was a tragic story. They lost their house. They lost everything, and are living somewhere temporary. They set up a GoFundMe in June, and raised a little over five thousand. Not bad, but not much compare to what they lost.

I can’t imagine getting struck by lightning in my own house. Because I kind of like thunder and lightning, you know, from a distance. And I’m basically cauthious, I don’t take showers in lightning storms. But I’ve never thought to hold off on that corned beef and cabbage leftover plate. I should go around the house with a strong magnet and draw a “no-go” map.

So real sympathies for Bill Brucks.
