Lottery Run – The Weird Side of the Internet – by Liam Sweeny.

Here’s a fact you might not know, from our friends at the American National Endowment for Financial Education: 70% of the large jackpot lottery winners go bankrupt within their first first few years. I don’t have to tell you that, maybe, if I didn’t have a shining example of this. His name is David Lee Edwards, and despite the “three names,” he wasn’t a serial killer. But he spent most of his life being an armed robber, in and out of jail. And during one of his “outs,” he managed to pay water bill with enough left over for a scice of pie and a couple of lottery teckets. And one of those was the the jackpot, $27 million.

I’m not one to shit on people who make bad decisions, but this is really emblematic of a story that plays out over the country. 70%, remember. So here were his words upon winning.

“You know, a lot of people, they’re out of work. They don’t hardly have anything, and so I don’t want to accept this money by saying I’m going to get mansions and I’m going to get cars,” he said. “I would like to accept it with humility. I want this money to last, for me, for my future wife, for my daughter, and future generations.”

This this hombre went balls to the wall. Bear in mind, this was 2001. His first move was a $200.000 party in Vegas. And it skyrocketed from there. A million worth of cars, a $1.2 million Palm Beach house (2001. I doubt you could get a wastepaper basket in Palm Beach for $1.2 million now.) And, of course, a CIA black budget for drugs for he and his friends. Worth noting that his ex-wife sold him custody of their daughter for a half-mil. She’s the only one I feel bad for here.

What happened to him? He was found in a storage unit with his current wife surrounded by their own feces.

So if you know yourself, for God’s sake, just take the payments.
