Whassup in the 518

Friday, July 11th

Coppélia, SPAC, Saratoga Springs, 7:30pm

The delightful tale of a mad inventor and the life-like doll he creates, The New York Times calls Coppélia “story ballet done to perfection.”

One of the greatest comic ballets of the 19th Century, Coppélia has remained one of the best-loved classical works in the ballet repertory. The three-act ballet features a lush, melodic score by Delibes, a fairy-tale set and extensive ensemble dances.

In Coppélia, a young man named Frantz becomes infatuated with a life-like doll named Coppélia, created by the eccentric toymaker Dr. Coppélius. Frantz’ fiancée, Swanilda, discovers the truth and cleverly tricks Dr. Coppélius into believing she is Coppélia, ultimately exposing the deception and reuniting with Frantz in a joyful celebration of their love.

Robbins, Balanchine & Peck, SPAC, Saratoga Springs, 2pm

Spellbinding and kinetic masterworks by Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine accompany a SPAC premiere by Justin Peck.

Embark on a journey that takes you from iconic classic ballets to the excitement and innovation of new choreography. This program opens with Robbins’ spirited work In G Major, followed by the signature Balanchine leotard ballet Stravinsky Violin Concerto. Closing the program is Mystic Familiar, an exhilarating SPAC premiere by Justin Peck and the creators of The Times Are Racing.

The Emo Night Tour, Empire Live, Albany, 8pm

Belle-Skinner & The Easy Speaks, Lark Hall, Albany, 6pm-8pm

Belle-Skinner & The Easy Speaks – a Capitol Region NY-based Jazz Trio (Belle-Skinner: Vocals/Guitar, Tyler Giroux: Piano, Jason Emmond: Upright Bass)

Belle-Skinner is a dark nostalgic singer-songwriter based in New York. Though her influences cover a broad range of genres – from French chansons and Russian folk to contemporary alt-pop and jazz – her voice often draws comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Astrud Gilberto, Mary Hopkin, and early St. Vincent. Joined by Tyler Giroux on piano and Jason Emmond on upright bass as The Easy Speaks, Belle-Skinner will play and sing her favorite jazz songs, as well as many of her own original jazz compositions.

TopHouse with special guest Scott Levi Jones, Lark Hall, Albany, 8pm

A lot of people ask us what genre we are. The truth is, we don’t know. Check out some of our music and let us know what you think. In reality, if you really want to get to know about TopHouse, y’all should shoot us a message and say hi, come to a show, or listen to some music! Why not all three?

“Fast-paced, high-energy foot stompers. Ballads that’ll make you cry. It’s kind of like a rock band married old-fashioned bluegrass and had a little baby. And named it TopHouse.”

An Evening with Shadowgrass, Putnam Place, Saratoga Springs, 8pm

When their instrumental prowess earned them a vast following on social media, childhood friends turned all-star act Shadowgrass found sudden success. But as a young band, the expectations that went along with a large audience proved daunting. “We felt a lot of pressure to make something uniquely us, because we had such a big following, and we felt that they deserved more than what we had given them as of yet.” explains the band. The group dug deep into their own musicality, and tried to block out the noise for their sophomore release All That Will (release date: Oct 4, 2024). “It turned out that dropping those self-imposed expectations and just writing/making music for our own enjoyment was the key to finding our collective voice and making a record we are all proud of.”

The Sweet Remains, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 8pm-10pm

Drawing comparisons to Crosby, Stills & Nash, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Eagles, while resonating with fans of John Mayer, Ray LaMontagne, and Jason Mraz, The Sweet Remains offer a rare blend of contemporary relevance and classic folk-pop charm. Their warmth, humor, and musical chemistry create an experience that feels both fresh and familiar.

The trio—Rich Price, Greg Naughton, and Brian Chartrand—are each accomplished singer-songwriters in their own right, with careers spanning solo albums, international tours, film, and television. Their feature film The Independents, inspired by the band’s journey, earned praise from The Hollywood Reporter and LA Times and is currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Tubi, and more.

Local on Lark with Oobleck and The Alec Lewis Group at The Eleven, Lark Hall, Albany, 6pm-8pm

Oobleck is a melee of horns, super heavy drums and bass, and your favorite type of chunky guitar riffing that leaves your bum shaking and your face grinning. When we say funk, we actually mean funked-out-afro-rock-alt-dub-whatever.
Balancing razor-sharp horn lines with live group improvisation, Oobleck mesmerizes…delving fearlessly where the moment takes them. Pushing the bounds of sound, Oobleck’s funk is an unbridled expression of the dark and light: a quintet’s worth of energy and synergy, infusing you with the raw love of music that comes only from playing, dancing and breathing from a place deep down. In the end, it’s funk to fuel your soul.
