Gershwin & Bernstein, SPAC, Saratoga Springs, 7:30pm

The Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop returns to SPAC leading the Orchestra in Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Bernstein mentored and inspired Alsop throughout her career, establishing her as one of the foremost conductors of his music.

The program is bookended by the music of another American icon, George Gershwin. The evening begins with his rousing Cuban Overture, inspired by a trip to Havana and combining traditional Cuban rhythms with Gershwin’s original themes.

Nordlys Global Voices Series: Elida Almeida, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 8pm-10pm

Born on the island of Santiago in Cape Verde, Elida Almeida began her musical journey singing in church, developing a voice that’s as rich in emotion as it is in strength. At just 22, she burst onto the international scene by winning the Prix Découvertes RFI in 2015 and has since graced major world music stages across Europe, Africa, and North America. This past March, Elida performed an NPR Tiny Desk Concert as part of their x globalFEST.

The Summer Square Concert Series is a free, outdoor event at 6 PM Saturday nights June -September in front of the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.

Laufey: A Night at the Symphony, SPAC, Saratoga Springs, 7:30pm

GRAMMY-winning jazz singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Laufey brings a spell-binding sonic journey performing alongside The Philadelphia Orchestra for her new “Night at the Symphony” program.

Last summer, Laufey (pronounced lāy-vāy) made her SPAC debut at our Saratoga Jazz Festival. Now, the “Gen Z It Girl” (The New York Times) will return to the SPAC stage for her Philadelphia Orchestra debut with her “Night at the Symphony” program, which premiered at the Hollywood Bowl and was made into a film directed by Sam Wrench (Taylor Swift |The Eras Tour).

Upstate Youth Choreographers’ Showcase, Proctors Theatre, Schenectady

Upstate Youth Choreographers’ Showcase (UYCS) is an entirely student run community of dedicated local youth dancers and choreographers. Join them for their fourth annual showcase of original choreography on August 9. For more information, see @upstate_ycs on Instagram.

Everclear, one of the leading alternative rock bands to emerge from the ‘90s, celebrated their 30th Anniversary in recent years, and founder, vocalist and guitarist Art Alexakis has made it clear that he has no plans to slow down. Caffè Lena has been pivotal to Darlingside’s journey since 2013 when the band first performed as part of our Emerging Artist Breakout series. Annual shows here helped them gain national attention, with NPR describing their indie rock as “exquisitely arranged, literary minded, baroque folk-pop.” Their elegant compositions and unified voices have earned praise from Rolling Stone and The New Yorker, fostering a worldwide following.
