Olivia Rodrigo, Get On the Damn Phone

I just heard Olivia Rodrigo. I live under a rock, got the same ten albums from high school on repeat. Now I had heard of her, who hasn’t? But I hadn’t moseyed over to YouTube to check her out. But I now have, starting with her video “Get Him Back,” and I’m going to declare myself,.. what Olivia Rodrigo for “Swifty?” Yeah, that. She’s got a great voice, and whoever that guy was that done treated her wrong, he’s kicking himself with steel-toe boots.

“Get Him Back” has got a catch; it was shot with the new iPhone 15 Pro Max, and you’d never be able to tell. It was shot by a professional director, Jack Begert, with credits of Kendrick Lamar and Paul McCartney. So it wasn’t like Olivia whipped out her iPhone and tossed it to a buddy and said “get my good side.” It was very skillfully done. Rodrigo is even cloned frequently, as there are many car windows to be smashed and you could imagine one’s arms would get tired. And a little trivia, each clone has since gone on to date a dickhead, and they’re all currently putting together revenge albums.

When you see this video, realizing it was shot with an iPhone, you are going to be very tempted to invest in one so you can shoot music videos and short films. But make sure you don’t give anyone the number. Or put that shit in Airplane Mode. Last thing you want is the one guy that still calls people on the phone to call you in the mid-point of your opus (it’s me, I’m the last guy on earth.)

I’m an older guy, not AARP brochure old, but old enough to sympathize with the reference. So I’m pretty out of touch with Gen-Z music. But I’m not “get off my lawn.” The younger music I’ve heard is pretty kickass, and I’m putting Olivia Rodrigo at the top of the list.
