Jail Baby – The Weird Side of the Interview – by Liam Sweeny.

Love finds a way. The geeky kid with an expansive Star Wars collectible armada does find his Princess Leia, or can if he’s not rating on scales of ten, which no self-respecting Jedi would do. Love finds a way. We stride confidently into the club and make them grovel and swoon, or we share half a Reuben on a coffee date we’ll remember fifty years later. But truly and indeed, love will find a way. Even in jail.

The intersection of love, and a little magic, found its way in Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade, where two inmates, both locked up for murder, had a baby… without ever hanging out.

Immaculate conception is a violation of the rules in Turner Guilford Knight and is punishable by a freezing of one’s commissary, but for Joan Depaz and Daisy Link, it was a thing worth doing.

Okay, so it wasn’t immaculate conception, but it was magic, depending on how you define that. I won’t say it was sleight of hand, because our minds go where they go, but it was pulled off under the watchful gaze of a skeptical audience. They “met” in the vents, where people from different parts of the prison can hear each other ands talk. They got to know each other, know turned to love and Depaz told Link he always wanted a baby.

So how? How did his wish come true? How did Daisy Link suddenly become pregnant? It wasn’t exactly Ocean’s Eleven. Depaz wrapped his, um, seed, in Saran Wrap and sent in through the vent on a piece of string. Daisy got a yeast infection applicator and loaded it up, and after a few tries, life!

Of all the cool tricks you hear about, convicts smuggling contraband, how crazy is it that a baby will now be classified as “prohibited items.”

But really, love will find a way.
