Passport Series: Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas, Universal Preservation Hall, Saratoga Springs

2023 Grammy nominee Nathan Williams is a zydeco legend with over three and a half decades under his hat as Southwest Louisiana’s most beloved Creole music pioneer.

Blessed with a 65th Grammy Awards nomination for his most recent recording Lucky Man, Nathan and his top-shelf band have more than 35+ years of history as Acadiana’s top R&B, blues, and zydeco ensemble.    Whether he is performing at the likes of NYC’s Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall’s CityWide Concert Series, DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, Europe’s top blues festivals or down home at his brother’s famous El Sido’s Zydeco & Blues Club in Lafayette, Louisiana, Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas never fail to get the audience up and shakin’ a leg to their un-rivaled stomp-down zydeco party!

Two Planets Away blends a thoughtful, yet fun mixture of rock, R&B, reggae and jazz. The quartet is know for their energetic live performances that some have referred to as: “jam R&B.” With one full-length album under their belts, the band has been steadily releasing single’s from their second album entitled: “Slightly More,” over the past few months. They are also releasing a live, five-song EP in the coming weeks that was shot at Jive Hive Live. Two Planets Away is made up of current and former members of Capital Zen, Formula 5, Shu, and The Minivans.

Goodnight Moonshine feat. Molly of Red Molly, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 8pm-10pm

This duo combines the evocative voice and songwriting of Molly Venter, known for her sublime singing in vocal trio Red Molly, with husband, Oberlin-trained guitarist Eben Pariser of New Orleans style jazz band Roosevelt Dime.

Venter’s voice, which can be called both “biker-chick smoky” (New Haven Register), and “like silk” (American Songwriter Magazine), pairs with trance-induced stream-of-consciousness writing in songs that probe the depths of inner experience.

Happy Hour with Organ Fairchild at The Eleven at Lark Hall, Lark Hall, Albany, 6pm-8pm

Hailed as a “fast-rising NY band” by Live For Live Music, and a group that’s “making waves in the scene” by JamBase, Organ Fairchild craft their organ-trio-meets-rock-band sound — described as “adventurous, vital and alive” by Glide Magazine — by synthesizing influences ranging from Soulive and Medeski Martin & Wood to The Grateful Dead, Steely Dan and the Meters. And when they’re on stage completely captivating an audience without a bass player – and nobody singing – there is no confusing them for any other artist on today’s scene. As FunkCity.net writes, “Get ready to be bowled over by this terrific trio – old school funk with new era notions of jam.”

Ominous Seapods, Lark Hall, Albany, 7pm

Ominous Seapods are Max Verna, Tom Pirozzi, Brian Mangini and Ted Marotta. They were an integral part of the 90’s Jamband scene who frequently performed with or along side bands such as moe., Disco Biscuits and God Street Wine. Although one member, Dana Monteith, moved to Australia, they reformed and are currently playing select dates around the Northeast as a 4 piece often with special guests. Their shows include all the favorites in the Seapod’s original catalog along with a few choice covers and some brand new songs as well.

Peak Jazz Series: Soggy Po’ Boys, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 8pm-9:30pm

This New England band was an audience favorite at “Caffe Lena @ SPAC 2023” and we’ve been eager to bring them back to Saratoga ever since. With guitar, reeds, brass and drums, the Po’ Boys get the walls shakin’! Their line-up of seven A-list players is spreading the good news of New Orleans music across the northeast and beyond, playing at concert halls, street corners, festivals and libraries alike. They go beyond NOLA jazz to include the myriad traditions that flow through that city, from traditional Caribbean tunes, to Meters funk, soul, and brass band / street beat music. Hard to imagine a more joyful way to spend a cold February night than with the Po’ Boys at Lena’s!
