reaLation was born from two separate ideas. First, the songs the band writes seem to focus on real world problems, issues and concerns. They try to shed light on subject areas that were either taboo or ignored in the past, or issues that have yet to come to the surface. In simple terms, true reality. Second, the band feels one of the most important facets of human existence is the ability to relate to one another and the environment and society everyone exists in. The songs that have truly turned them on the most are the ones they really related to. There have been songs that they have been able to relate to right away and others that have taken an experience or life circumstance to create the connection. It is from this that the term reaLation. was created and they feel it truly reflects what they are accomplishing as artists.

An Evening with Kate Taylor, Caffe Lena, 8pm-10pm
Singer/songwriter Kate Taylor makes a triumphant return with a seasoned, lived-in, bluesy voice, marking her renewed embrace of music-making
If you haven’t heard much from Kate Taylor in the last half century, it’s because she gave up the rock life nearly as quickly as she started it, moving to Martha’s Vineyard where she married and raised her two children. They spent summers living in a tepee, later made jewelry from quahog shells and dug for scallops to earn a living, and lived a life out of the public eye. The spark for this album was ignited at Kate’s 70th birthday party when her agent brought up the fact that the key players who appeared on 1971’s Sister Kate, including music veteran Peter Asher, are still around and very active. Asher liked the idea and Kate was instantly on board, writing the title track and assembling a group of songs complemented by her bluesy, lived-in voice. Brother James commented: “For Kate to be doing this with Peter, and that both of them have this life experience that brings them back together, it’s really a moving thing. I think it’s so great that Kate will have this next iteration, you know, this next chance for people to hear her and pick up on her.”
Kate Taylor’s return from a long hiatus of making music and touring “basks in a radiant glow that finds Taylor as effusive and excited as a teen releasing a first record” according to American Songwriter. The opening track of her latest release Why Wait! – years after debut Sister Kate – is a funkified take on the Beatles’ “Good Day Sunshine,” a fitting decree for a new era of making music. She shouts out “Good morning, world!” which seem both a re-awakening, and a luminous proclamation that Taylor has returned. Rolling Stone notes: “Fifty years ago, James Taylor’s sister released her debut album, then promptly vanished from the scene. Now, decades after she traded rock stardom for life in a teepee, Kate Taylor is back.”

Combining punk abandon and tightly-coiled dance music has always been bonded into the band’s DNA. It’s this core plus their growth and mastery of songwriting that has seen them outlive the mid-2000s ‘indie/dance punk’ tag and has allowed them to consistently grow lyrically and sonically from album to album. As If is their most transcendent collection of songs yet. “Each album we’ve made has gotten closer and closer to our live set and this, we’re proud to say, is the closest we’ve come yet. We were heavily influenced by current dance music — Nina Kraviz, Moodymann, Paranoid London, Rrose and Delroy Edwards were frequently referenced — and philosophically by the early ’90s house records we love on labels like Trax and Dancemania and by artists like Romanthony and Green Velvet. Those records sound great because they’re fairly raw attempts to use the technology of the time to ape the New York and Philly disco records that those producers loved. We figured, if those old house records sound like they do because the artists manipulated disco samples with MPCs, why couldn’t we just sample ourselves and manipulate the tracks with Ableton Live? The more raw it came out the better it felt, not only because that’s what excited us about those old records, but because it felt more punk, which always feels good.”

Surprise Chef (Australia) / Alanna Royale, No Fun, Troy, 7pm-11pm
Surprise Chef, https://surprisechef.bandcamp.com
Surprise Chef’s music is based on evoking mood; their vivid arrangements utilize time and space to build soundscapes that invite the listener into their world. The quintet’s distinct sound pulls from 70s film scores, the funkier side of jazz, and the samples that form the foundation of hip hop. They push the boundaries of instrumental soul and funk with their own approach honed by countless hours in the studio, studying the masters, and perhaps most importantly, the ‘tyranny of distance’ that dictates a unique perspective to their music.
Alanna Royale, https://alannaroyale.bandcamp.com/
Alanna Royale makes classic-minded R&B and soul music for the modern age. It’s a sound rooted in big melodies, blasts of brass, percussive punch, and old-school grooves, with songs that shine a light not only on frontwoman Alanna’s larger-than-life voice, but her songwriting chops, too.
