Dan Carr and the Cure for Asthma – Interview – Thanks for Asking – by Liam Sweeny.
RRX: Who are you? Not, like, philosophically, but you know, who are the members of the band, who plays what? Describe yourself in one sentence (it can be a long sentence.)
DC: I’m Dan Carr, I play the guitar and sing, There is also Joe Taurone on the tubs, Sam Walzyck on the bass, Gabe Klingler-Horn on the pedal Steel, Juliana Castrillon singing, and Tori Christie also singing
RRX: Do you have anything out right now that people can enjoy, and if so, what’s the best way for them to get it?
DC: We have 3 albums out that you can listen to on bandcamp – a self-titled album from 2021, a collaborative album with toriendofstory that came out last year titled, “Bar and Grill” and “Demolition Derby New Old Car” which came out this past November.
RRX: What was the very first reaction to your music, from the first person to ever hear so much as a practice jam or the demo of your first song? Paint the picture for us.
DC: When I was in high school I showed my girlfriend at the time a couple “songs” I had recorded in my basement. We were in the McDonald’s parking lot, I played them over the car speakers. I’m pretty sure she said something along the lines of “it’s just guitar and drums? It’s just the same thing over and over aren’t there any other parts?” I could be exaggerating I can’t remember it all that well.
RRX: You sing, you rap, you play guitar, play drums, you have no doubt struggled to learn music. Something probably tripped you up. What was it for each of you? What did you have to overcome?
DC: Singing’s hard, I feel like I have to trick myself into thinking I’m Bruce Springsteen or something every time I do it. I need a confidence booster. We’ve been going to Karaoke every Thursday at the Madison Theatre which seems to help.
RRX: Different people in the band will like different songs. A drummer’s favorite song on the release will be different than the guitar player’s. What are each of your favorite songs from your most recent album?
DC: Everyone in my band hates all my songs. I messaged them in our group chat and asked which ones were their favorite and Tori was like “they’re all too short and none of them have any bridges”. Gabe likes the song critter because “he doesn’t know what to do if all the attention isn’t on me”
RRX: Is there a favorite time of year? What time of year does the band have the most shows? Is there a recurring thing in the year that’s particularly memorable?
DC: We all like the summer time. We play the most in February. We have a Friendsgiving every November that is quite a hoot.
RRX: How can people keep up with you? What’s coming up, soon or eventually?
DC: We play rarely, I’m pretty bad about keeping up with the instagram and all that too but I try my best! Follow me @dancarrandthecureforasthma for details on gigs/releases.
