This is Jesse Sample. Pursuing a just and moral life requires struggle. It’s a war to the last breath. But there is a theory that some people don’t engage in this struggle. Or perhaps they lose their way to a place where it makes more sense to stop fighting and review a whole other array of options.

A moral code restricts one to only moral behaviors and engages the conscience to react to breaches of that code. For us to do good, we must assume it in others. It can be healthy to achieve a balance of being aware of malintent and choosing to assume the best intent.

Then there’s the flip. Nobody knows what really goes on in the heads of their neighbors. The good doctor can diagnose you with whatever they want, and they’ll never really know. The cultural winds blow and a king from 2000 years ago can be classified as having a disorder in modern times. I don’t think Nero would be too upset if being critically assessed by one of the millions of people who just graduated from their psychology degree program. They can call you a sociopath, but maybe you just call it something else.

Nobody knows the way you see the world the way you do. It’s the real estate that only you can own. It can be seaside bluffs or the Mojave Desert. Your call.
