This is Jesse Sample. When we write songs, we create rooms and we exist in those spaces. We take impressions from these rooms and we seek to express ourselves in these spaces.

When I listen to the music of my heroes, I exist in their world and I learn about how I feel. When I listen to Type O Negative, it’s always a crisp October night. When I listen to David Bowie, I’m always in outer space. And when I listen to The Red Hot Chili Peppers, I’m always in California, or perhaps Michigan.

Some nights it’s a bar with neon signs and others it’s a Baroque era Opera house. Maybe it’s in my Aunt’s living room or in my in-laws kitchen. What is it for you? Does a certain song bring you back to a homecoming dance or to a post-funeral trip to the bar?

This week, I spent a little time exploring some of the lesser-known rooms in my subconscious mind. Always a revealing time
