Lukey B (UK) – Interview – Thanks for Asking! – by Liam Sweeny.

RRX: Every artist’s first song is a milestone. But so is the latest song. Describe the first song/album you recorded, and also the latest song/album you recorded; what are the differences?

LB: My debut song as a solo artist ‘Bella’s song’ came from a painful place. My best friend took her own life, I wrote the song for her. I wanted to share it with people and I wanted to do it properly. Grieving my favourite girl in the sky kicked off Lukey B. My latest single ‘My Love is Haunted’ is a song for me. It’s about helping the world but destroying yourself. Giving as much love as you can, even if the love feels tainted and damaged.

RRX: Music genres are difficult for some artists. Some strictly adhere; others not so much. What is your perspective on the genre you play, or the genres you hover around?

LB: This is a great question! I actually started off as a drum and bass MC, although I was heavily influenced by UK hip hop. I  was a naughty kid, never turned up for my GCSEs. I went to college to study music where I met Luke and Davey. Luke taught me to play guitar, then I started singing and all the doors opened. I had never felt so connected with music. I suppose you’d call it indie, but we played what we felt. I don’t think I’ve ever just stuck to one genre but I suppose I’ve mainly floated between Dnb, hip hop, alternativce, Indie and pop.

RRX: Cover art is cool. It shows listeners what the artist thinks the album is all about. Because music can be felt visually. If you had to give the public a visual image that you think they would see and just “get” your groove right away, what would it be?

LB: Picture this. A lion wearing an Adidas shell suite, a crow on his shoulder overlooking a broken world. Now turn up the contrast and make it really colourful. Or, my logo done by thetorshedraws. She’s done a cracking job at catching my personality.

RRX: We have to play somewhere, and sometimes those places have more going for them than a stage and a power outlet. What is a memorable place you played, and bonus points if it’s not a well-known place.

LB: When in the the band ‘Rapturous’ and in the beginning we played some right random gigs. I remember playing at a school fate where we sang about drugs. We once played outside Tesco’s where our bassist was working except my guitar wouldn’t work and me and the drummer had a row. Playing on a roof was another memorable one. Shame The Beatles beat us to it.

RRX: Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Or so they say. Whether you’re off the wagon, on it, or never been, there’s something you got a thirst for. What are some of your basically harmless vices?

LB: I like to think I’ve pretty much completed the sex and drugs, so now it’s all about the rock and roll. I’ve got 15 years of fuck ups and missed opportunities. Drink and drugs definitely held me back. I mean, it’s not the 90s anymore. If it was, the band would have made it. we’d have definitely given the Gallaghers a good run for their money. It’s now time for the music to come first. Nowadays I’m addicted to diary milk chocolate. Since going sober I’m a huge chocoholic. Harmless?  Not to sure. Maybe it’ll be chocolate that wipes out Lukey B.

RRX: Let’s talk about your next project, your next few. Just not the ones you’re working on now. The ones you have your eyes on for the future. What’s coming to us?

LB: I have so much I want to do it’s crazy! I have shit loads of home demos and there’s at least 4 notebooks full of ideas and songs sat waiting to be perfected. End of the month im staying at The Joplin House studio for five days recording some of the best stuff I have ever written. My producer Dan Lucas is an absolute wizard. So stay tuned for a lot of new music on the way!
