Good thing Daryl’s House, the music venue, is only an incomplete replica of the real home, or else the second floor would have blown higher than a Space X rocket.
Florida’s Guitar Army made a stop at Pawling, New York to give a show to a packed house. This repeat visitor to Daryl’s House never had to take a shuttle to the venue. Tonight was different. The side room even had diners watching the concert via the television. I had no view of the bar, but can only imagine the same level of attendance.
Henry Paul and his squad, including his son Henry Paul IV, treated the fans to a show of classic Outlaws tunes. Fifty years and dozens of members later has enabled the Outlaws to deliver a special brand of tight guitar licks, melodic piano riffs, well-placed bass and percussion lines, and beautifully stacked harmonies. All that instrumentation and vocalization paired with well-designed imagery, emotion, and sometimes rambunctious lyrics made for another tremendous show. Many a head was set to bobbing and singing with a few staking out floor estate to actually dance.

Paul comes from Kingston, N.Y., having spent his younger days on his grandfather’s farm. He has a storied history in the biz from working at a musical career in the ’60s and ’70s in Florida and NYC, to participating in and founding ensembles. Paul joined the Outlaws, fronted the Henry Paul Band, founded Blackhawk, and did a solo stint before rejoining the Outlaws. He brings a joy to the show that is evident in his attention to the crowd, even signaling for a photo op of the axe men in action. How many times have you seen that?

Opening for the army was a new talent, Colin Stough from Gattman, Mississippi. Stough finished third in Season 21 of American Idol. He gave us a sampling of his songs and chatted a bit about his life experiences, his mother, and songwriting. An able guitar player with a rich baritone, he warmed up the diners with his shy, yet commanding delivery. He cleverly asked the audience about their love of their mothers and launched into Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man.” That there was good enough for this LS fan to give him another tryout (I won’t be spinning a chair or any other stupid trope, though).
He has an EP “Lookin for Home” you might want to give a listen to. Find more on Stough at www.officialcollinstough.com with links to all the requisite music (and merch) links.
