Amanda Case – Interview – Thanks for Asking! – by Liam Sweeny.

RRX: What do you think is the most poorly understood thing about music, or the music you play?

AC: Not everything I write is about a true story or experience. The feelings are always real, but for me, songwriting is just as much about storytelling, and sometimes, those stories are fiction. I love exploring my imagination.

RRX: Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Or so they say. Whether you’re off the wagon, on it, or never been, there’s something you got a thirst for. What are some of your basically harmless vices?

AC: Snacks, bourbon, and good coffee. Do you sense a theme?

RRX: Would you rather have one of your songs blow up and make you a one-hit wonder and household name, or would you rather have all your songs be solidly received, but no chart-climbers? (You have to pick one or the other here.)

AC: I 100% would rather have all of my songs be solidly received. All I’ve ever wanted is for people to feel like they can connect with my music, even if it’s a small handful of people. The intimacy of writing and sharing music is why I keep doing it.

RRX: We let it out differently when we play music. The happy, sad, good and back; it can all be put out musically. Overall, do you feel better when you sing about the better times, or the worser times? Is there a difference you can describe?

AC: For some reason, I have a REALLY hard time writing about happier things. I think songwriting has just always been my way of processing hard feelings, so naturally, I write about those hard things. Give me the heartbreak, the longing, the tears, that’s the sweet spot.

RRX: What was the very first reaction to your music, from the first person to ever hear so much as a practice jam or the demo of your first song?

AC: My memory of the very first reaction to my music is playing for my (still) best friend back in high school. I think I had brought my guitar out to my car, sat in the back seat, and made her turn around so she wasn’t looking at me. But I think her reaction was a good one, maybe surprised that I had hidden this talent so well.

RRX: Our style comes from the extension of our influences. It’s like an evolution. We’re influenced, and it inspires us to influence. What can you say about your influences, and what you feel you’ve done with their influence as a musician or band? Have you extended their work?

AC: Most of my influences, from what I can tell, write and play music because they genuinely love it. Johnnyswim, Maggie Rogers, Léon, I could on…Their emotions are raw, their lyrics are brutally honest, and their music is timeless. I’d like to think I’m keeping that same spirit alive in my own music.
