Aila Chiar – Interview – Thanks for Asking! – by Liam Sweeny.
RRX: Every artist’s first song is a milestone. But so is the latest song. Describe the first song/album you recorded, and also the latest song/album you recorded; what are the differences?
AC: The first mixtape I ever recorded is called Self Reflections: A Tainseld Mixtape. Funny story, I had no intention of making it into a project. I was recording the songs separately but as I was listening I was like wayment, these sound pretty good together and thus the mixtape was born. The mixtape is riddled with affirmations and mantras as well as raw emotion and wordplay. Self Reflections is different from the projects I’m currently working on because it’s more rap focused whereas my singing voice is spotlighted in these upcoming projects. The theme of Self Reflections explored self empowerment and while these projects will explore those themes, they’ll also delve into romance, gratitude, pain, and intuition.
RRX: Music genres are difficult for some artists. Some strictly adhere; others not so much. What is your perspective on the genre you play, or the genres you hover around?
AC: I feel genres are bendable and can smooth into each other. There are so many different sounds within genres.
RRX: You sing or you rap, you play guitar, play drums, what have you, you have no doubt struggled to learn music. Something probably tripped you up. What was it for each of you? What did you have to overcome (bands, pick a member)?
AC: THE BEAT PRODUCTION AND MIXING/RECORDING PROCESSSS!!!!! In the beginning, I was STRESSEDDDDDD LMAO. There’d be days where I’d put my laptop in a different room and avoid looking at it because everytime I’d think about it I’d get frustrated. But afterwhile, I began to enjoy the process of learning, failing forward, feeling frustrated, feeling successful after finishing a song, exploring the different places to hold the mic when recording and everything else that comes with beat production and mixing/recording.
RRX: Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Or so they say. Whether you’re off the wagon, on it, or never been, there’s something you got a thirst for. What are some of your basically harmless vices?
AC: I love vitamin water and cranberry juice. OH and warm water with lemon and honey. I really like lemons, sometimes I eat them like oranges.
RRX: We let it out differently when we play music. The happy, sad, good and back; it can all be put out musically. Overall, do you feel better when you sing about the better times, or the worser times? Is there a difference you can describe?
AC: When it’s me, I feel better when singing and/or rapping about certain memories. It’s different when you are being vulnerable in front of others. In some cases, I’ll feel empowered and free but in others I’ll be transported back to my room where I was pouring myself onto a piece of paper, feeling the feels.
RRX: What would you like fans to know before they come to see you play? (No basic stuff; get specific.)
AC: Be ready to speak life into you and do a breathing exercise!
