I recently had the pleasure of catching up with Steve Mignano of Drab, and it was one of those
conversations where you realize just how vital geography can be to a band’s sound. Drab’s self-
titled debut immediately grabbed me with its raw blend of hard rock muscle and bluesy grit — a
record that feels both classic and modern, unapologetically steeped in New Orleans character
without leaning on clichés.
Steve spoke about how Drab was essentially born in a storage locker during the pandemic, with
the band using isolation as fuel rather than a roadblock. That sense of defiance and urgency is all
over their debut, which was recently rereleased by Wormhole Death Records.
Tracks like “The Lonely Place” hit with a swagger that recalls the best of ‘70s and ‘90s hard
rock, yet there’s a shadowy undercurrent to the whole album that could’ve only come from a city
like New Orleans — where beauty and decay, tradition and rebellion coexist.
What stood out most in our talk was Steve’s commitment to forging Drab’s own path. In a region
better known for sludgy, doomy metal, they’ve carved out a space that honors those roots while
sidestepping obvious comparisons. Steve credits the band’s surroundings — the old Masonic
Temple studio, the city’s restless energy — as inescapable influences, but Drab’s sound is its own
animal: loud, loose, and hauntingly melodic.
With a recent collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Adrian Bushby under their belt and
new material on the horizon, Drab’s sharpening their blade.
