Synth Band OMD releasing “Bauhaus Staircase”

Written by on August 28, 2023

Haven’t heard of OMD? If you’re into synthpop, you have. If you’re not into synthpop, allow me to make introductions. OMD, or Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark, is an electronic band from England that’s been around since 1978. They basically invented electricity, and put it to a beat.

Okay, so the original band disbanded in 1997, but at that time, disbanding bands was the thing, wasn’t it? And viola, they’re back. You can kill the band, but not the groove that brought it together in the first place.

Well, here it is, 2023, electronic music is big, and OMD is releasing its 14th album, entitled “Bauhaus Staircase.” The first single out is the title track, so let’s let OMD’d Andy McCluskey have a word or two.

“I am a huge lover of visual arts, especially mid-20th century movements,” McCluskey told Brooklyn Vegan. “I reference them often in my titles and lyrics. The song ‘Bauhaus Staircase’ is a metaphor for strength and artist passion in the face of criticism and adversity. The title is derived from an Oskar Schlemmer painting. He taught at Bauhaus and created the amazing futuristic costumes for The Triadic Ballet (referenced in the song).”

Worth mentioning that Bauhaus was a German art movement from around the 1920s to 1930s. Hard to describe, but you know it if you saw it. A lot of modern design traces its roots to Bauhaus.

Bauhaus is also a band. Interestingly, Bauhaus is an English rock band that also formed in 1978.

“Bauhaus Staircase” is going to drop October 27th via record label White Noise. I’m guessing it’s going to be a really sweet album to play in your haunted house, which is why they’re dropping it so close to Halloween. Think electronic music pumping adrenaline as people wander by your ketchup-coated skeletons. Good stuff.

Here’s what you came for. OMD’s title track, “Bauhaus Staircase.”
