This is Jesse Sample. When we think about our history, we may index events like the Peloponnesian War, the rise of Mozart, or the German’s invasion of Poland. While exciting and often mysterious, these are relatively recent events. Relative to what? Consider the birth of the sun. If you’re sitting on the 405, reflect on the origin of those mountains way off against the horizon. Let your mind wander amid the mutations and evolutions of the creatures that dwell in the Marianna trench. As deep as that place is, our history is even deeper. So deep that if you really think about it, the French Revolution could have gone down yesterday…at least in the bigger scheme of things.
Last night, Rosa, Thomas and I walked into the studio and started working. Thomas came in hot with some chords and the first few lyrics of what would become our verse. We took these first few lines and dove down deep into our natural history. And as is often the case, we found a love song. We liberated our star-crossed romance from eons of unthinkable speeds, theoretical forces and temperatures that could boils our seas or freeze our bodies whole, mid jump shot. By some freak chance, amidst the vast unknown we all live together on this rock and are bold enough to seek love.
This is part of our history, too.
And perhaps in this spirit, we might also notice that the theory of evolution and the belief in God’s creation are two things that shouldn’t be at odds. The difference between 6,000 years and 6 trillion years might not be that much. The elasticity of time and space is assumed across the scientific community, even if not wholly understood. And more to the heart of the matter, the question of the unmoved mover had had both theologians and scientists alike staring into their beer, since the beginning of time? Beginning of Existence? Perhaps. The start of Beer? Whatever…
The takeaway from all of this, is that love is precious. We are things, made of things, made of molecules, composed of atoms, which are made of components, that are made of components which are really just energy spinning around really really fast. And in our limited time in this configuration, we choose to seek love. And then, if we are lucky, some other configuration chooses to love us back. The shear fortune is overwhelming. Universally speaking, you would have had better odds at finding a Whataburger on the dark of the moon.
