INTERVIEW: Joey “Blue” Gonzalez

It’s fair to say that heavy metal drummers are some of the most dedicated individuals in the music business. When a drummer has a resume filled with iconic bands such as Superjoint, Warbeast, Hank 3, Phillip Anselmo & The Illegals, and recently GAMMACIDE, it’s easy to respect the will and dedication of the artist, especially in the metal community given the work load. Joey Gonzalez, also known as “Blue,” is a heavy metal drummer originally from Texas, whose resume is by far one of the most impressive in the industry. Getting his start at the bottom like any other musician at the age of 17, Joey’s workhorse mentality and hard work paved the way for him to be able to perform with such iconic artists and even to become an iconic artist himself through diligence and skill. His original drumming style is, by far, some of the best in the metal community. Joey was kind enough to take some time from his busy schedule to give RadioRadioX a little insight on his current projects, and how he keeps the metal gears grinding.
RRX: You are one of the most hard working musicians in the metal community, playing with numerous bands at once. What are your main projects that you are currently working on?
Joey Gonzalez: As of right now, I’m playing with the Dover Brothers, Beast of War, Perico, and most recently joined Gammacide.
RRX: Where did the “beans and rice beatdown” motto come from for Perico? How would you describe the style of Perico? And should we expect any releases anytime soon?
JG: Perico is most definitely a “slam” band with some lyrical madness sprinkled on top for spice. Simple riffs to jam and headbang to! As far as the slogan is concerned, beans and rice are a heavy influence where we’re from, and you need that kind of fuel when it comes to a beatdown. We just dropped one song and more on the way!
RRX: What are the origins of the Dover Brothers? How would you describe the style of music?
JG: The Dover Brothers are Calvin and Joiner Dover, two very talented good ol’ boys from Houston. They had this band for years and found Johnny, our Irish connection, for second guitar and songbird vocals. It wasn’t until after the Brothers and I met and jammed with Philip in En Minor that the idea of having me join the Brothers came up. They are incredible players, so when Calvin asked if I was interested in playing with them, I was in!
RRX: At what age did you start playing the drums? And when did you realize you wanted to be a working musician?
JG: I started playing drums when I was 12, got my first kit at 13, and never looked back. At that age, being a working musician isn’t the goal. It’s just to play and jam with your friends. Making this a career is a complete by-product of wanting to jam!
Although I will say that at 14, I saw this huge “Big 4 of Glam:” Poison, Whitesnake, Vince Neil, and someone else I didn’t give a shit at the time. I was there for the sake of a free ticket! Buuut … when I looked around and saw the people screaming and having a blast drinking, hooting, and hollering – I didn’t know how I was going to get the people on my side to get them to do that for me – but that’s when I knew I wanted this to be my world.
RRX: Who were your influences in playing drums? Personally, who was your major influence in life in general?
JG: In playing drums, Vinnie Paul is my number one, tied with Joey Jordison. Then Dave Lombardo and Gene Hoglan. Those four are most of the elements that make up my style, but there’s so many more, like Igor, Derek Roddy, George Kollias. Then we go old school, with Neil Peart, John Bonham, Baker, and various other eclectic artists.
I couldn’t say just one influence as far as my personal life. My family and bandmates have always been there for me and never steered me wrong. I started touring at 17 and was the youngest in all of my bands; luckily everyone took great care of me and guided me down the path of righteousness and thrash!!!
RRX: You have an overall talented style of drumming. How do you keep your stamina up when your schedule is very demanding?
JG: I don’t practice enough and hate myself for it. When I do practice I like to think I give it 110%. Stamina comes with repetition.
In order to function at a specific level of effectiveness, you need to be mentally prepared for the task at hand. I aim to kill every time I sit my fat ass down behind the kit (excuse my French.)
RRX: What equipment do you currently use and abuse?
JG: I love my Tama Drums! Tama hardware, Paiste cymbals, Czarcie Kopyto kick pedals, Footblaster triggers, and Promark sticks!!! I have some killer people I work with in the companies; it’s a dream come true to be able to play this gear!!!
RRX: Any interesting stories from being on the road touring?
JG: One time I dressed up like Cheech and sang “Earache My Eye” while Philip Anselmo played drums in London, I think, for his birthday. That was sick! Another time, my guitar player Mikey DeLeon flew out of the passenger seat of a hummer because this dude was driving like a d***head.
Once there was a f***ing shark on the table in catering for the display at Hellfest in France. Ya know, just random stuff like that.
RRX: What was your most memorable moment during your career?
JG: Our time in Japan and Australia was just surreal …
RRX: What can we expect from you musically in the future?
JG: All four bands I mentioned are active and going to be playing shows all this year!!!

RRX: What advice would you give a young drummer just starting out?
JG: To the aspiring drummer: play from the heart, play often, play loud, play soft, play cover tunes, play your own tunes, just play. Explore the kit and find your own style!

For the 40th anniversary of their breakthrough hit album, “Once Upon a Time.” Simple Minds is launching a North American tour with Soft Cell and Modern English, called “Alive & Kicking.” It will hit Canadian and American cities this year. It’ll begin in Ridgefield, WA in May and will conclude in Noblesville, IN in June. It hit New York City in June at PNC Bank in Holmdel, NJ and Jones Beach in Wantagh, NY. Tickets go on January 31st.

Despite many rumors of musical acts being banned from Saturday Night Live, creator and producer Lorne Michaels claimed that in the fifty years of the show’s running, he had never banned any musical act from appearing on the show. This comes from a new documentary, “Ladies and Gentlemen – 50 years of SNL Music.” Which appeared on NBC on January 27th, and is streaming now.
“I’ll read it sometimes in the Post, ‘So and so’s banned for life,’” Michaels said in the documentary. “We’ve never banned anyone. We’re way too crass and opportunistic. If something’s hot, we’re going to go for it and have it on.”
Alison Krauss & Union Station
Alison Krauss & Union Station have announced their first album in 14 years, called Arcadia. It will be out March 28th from Down The Road Records. The themes for this album center around reflections of the past.
“The stories of the past are told in this music. It’s that whole idea of ‘in the good old days when times were bad,’ Alison said to Brooklyn Vegan. “There’s so much bravery and valor and loyalty and dreaming, of family and themes of human existence that were told in a certain way when our grandparents were alive. Someone asked me, ‘How do you sing these tragic tunes?’ I have to. It’s a calling. I feel privileged to be a messenger of somebody else’s story. And I want to hear what happened.”
In addition to the album, Alison Krauss and Union Station will be on their first tour in a decade starting in April, which will include two nights on NYC’s Beacon Theatre in September.

I remember one time, when I was a kid living in North Albany, that I was a delinquent. Actually, I remember being a delinquent more than one time, but in this instance, my and my buddy were eggin’. Full dozen of eggs in our backpacks, arms like Nolan Ryan, no car was safe. And being true delinquents, we weren’t aiming at parked cars. So I remember launching at this taxi (which made no sense because my uncle was a cabbie and would’ve whooped my ass if he ever found out.) So I smack this cab, and he hits the brakes, flies back and we’re running, hearts pounding, hiding behind one of my neighbor’s houses. Now, benefit of age, he had to make rent so there was no way he was gonna chase us, but scary at he time.
So imagine a group of four delinquent teens now going up to some random guy’s house playing ‘ding-dong-ditch’ which is as stupid as it sounds so I won’t elaborate. But the joke was on them when after two ding-dongs, the garage door opens and shots ring out.
Meet 40 year-old Melvin Rankin, a registered sex-offender with a penchant for illegal firearms and an apparently unknown nemesis. Because, as the teens hopped in their car to get away, he chased them in his, still armed. Catching up with the teens at a dead end, he ordered them out of the gar at gunpoint and told them to lay down on the ground as he asked them questions, mostly revolving about a primary question, “who sent you?”
They told him about ding-dong-dash, and he eventually laid off, snatching their keys before leaving. Happily ever after? No, of course not. He was a scumbag. Cops arrested him and charged him with robbery, weapons possession, controlled substances, and a couple of minutiae that will get dropped in court for the big plea bargain.

INTERVIEW: John Jarvis

John Jarvis stands out as an accomplished vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, making significant waves in the metal scene with his exceptional mastery on both bass and guitar. Over the years, John has displayed his musical talents across many bands, including him utilizing his vocals and guitar skills in his band Nest, while also demonstrating his bass prowess with Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Fulgora, and Scour. Recently, I had the opportunity to catch up with John and he shared some insights into his musical journey with me.
RRX: At what age did you discover your passion for music? What was the first instrument that you learned to play?
There’s pictures of me with guitars at age 2, and I started learning to play seriously around 12 years old. I was lucky to have MTV back then and watched that daily, and my dad had a great record collection.
RRX: What influenced your desire to become a musician? Were there any important people that helped to shape your journey early on?
My uncle Paul played in bands, and we would “roadie” from time to time for them. During their rehearsals, if they took a break, us kids would take over the instruments and play.
MTV was such a big deal. I remember seeing the video for “Who Can It Be Now” by Men At Work, and thinking, “How cool would it be to play saxophone for a band?”
I told my uncle that I wanted to play saxophone and he talked me out of it, saying “You’ll get more gigs as a guitarist.”
RRX: You are in a few bands with your cousin Adam Jarvis. Have you guys been jamming since you were kids?
Yes, our first band was called “Primitive Sorcery,” when he was like 8 years old.
RRX: What were your favorite musicians growing up?
Growing up, it was the Beatles, then bands like Metallica, Motley Crue, and Guns N’ Roses.
RRX: What age were you when you first joined a band? If you could travel back in time, what advice would you give your younger self with all the wisdom you’ve acquired over the years?
I’d say I was around 13 when I started my first band. I guess I’d tell myself to chill out and have more fun; things are going to work out. If I knew at 13 that one day I’d have a band that toured with Pantera, I wouldn’t have believed it.
RRX: How did you join forces with Pig Destroyer? What was your favorite memory with the band, whether on the road or in the studio?
My cousin Adam is their drummer, so he brought me up when they decided to get a bassist.
Once we played SXSW and I ended up getting us an interview with Showtime for season 3 of “Twin Peaks,” a show we were all fans of.
RRX: Can you tell us how Fulgora merged the paths with Housecore Records?
I sent a demo to Housecore, and I believe the drummer from Haarp made sure Phil heard it, and he liked it luckily! He reached out to us, and soon after we were signed!
RRX: In 2024, your band Nest launched their fourth studio album titled “Endeavors,” marking their debut with Housecore Records. Could you share the inspiration behind “Endeavors” and provide some insights into the creative process that inspired it?
I recorded it in St Louis in my personal studio, and I started writing it the week I got an email from Housecore asking if we were interested in joining the label. Knowing Phil and Kate were interested whipped me into shape quickly.
RRX: How did the universe align your path to become a part of Scour?
Derek and I started Scour while I was tour-managing his band Cattle Decapitation. We were on tour with Cannibal Corpse (who I used to sell merch for), and we would find little spots to record along the way. I remember Rob Barrett walking by one day and nodding in approval, and I knew we were on to something.
RRX: I found it very interesting that Jason Momoa made guest vocals on “Doom” off of the “Black EP” – Can you elaborate what it was like collaborating with him like how did that come to be?
Derek met Jason on the final Slayer tour, and they exchanged numbers. One day Derek and I were thinking about guest vocalists, and I suggested Jason (as I knew he took lessons for metal vocals), and Derek texted him right then. Momoa agreed to do it instantly.
RRX: Scour has recently unveiled their latest single and music video titled “Blades,” which is part of their eagerly awaited debut full-length album, “Gold.” Can you share some insight on what it was like to create Scour’s first full length album? How was it collaborating with Gary Holt on a guest solo for this album?
It was a blast recording at Phil’s studio, as always! We had a great plan for the first full-length, and it’s great to finally see it come out. Gary nailed the solo, quite an honor to have him on the album!
RRX: “Gold” is set to release on February 21. Where can we expect to purchase/stream this album? Any plans for a future Scour tour?

There are always tour offers, and we just need the schedules to line up and get the right offer. But it’s mostly festivals for now, while Pantera is busy.
RRX: Nest and Scour are set to play the Milwaukee Metalfest this May 16-18. How does it feel to have both of your bands on the bill for this festival? What are you looking forward to most about performing? Any artists that you are pumped to see/jam with?
Since the festival is something I’d like to attend anyway, it’s great to play in a couple of bands there. I’m glad they spread us out a bit, with Nest on Friday, and Scour on Sunday. I’m looking forward to playing some songs live for the first time with both bands. There are so many great bands playing, but to name a few I’d say BTBAM, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Down.
RRX: What is your current equipment setup?
Currently, I use ESP guitars and basses, Darkglass bass amps, and GK bass cabs.
My guitar cabs have quite a story. KISS sold 10 cabs to Pantera, and they gutted a few and I have the KISS used speakers in my cabs now! Celestion Greenbacks used by Paul Stanley! So awesome.
RRX: What is your personal definition of success and what does it mean to you?
I’m just happy when the bills are paid and there’s food in the fridge, and I’m able to play music.
RRX: What key pieces of advice would you offer to musicians who are just beginning their journey in the industry?
I could write a book, and I might, but one key to being more professional as a band is setting up your drum kit BEFORE doors open; I’m talking cymbals on stands!!! And if you’re not the drummer, make your drummer do it, help if you have to.

Sophie Allison has always written candidly about her life, making Soccer Mommy one of indie rock’s most interesting and beloved artists of the last decade. After all, Soccer Mommy began as a bedroom-to-Bandcamp exercise with teenage Allison posting her plaintive songs as demos. Some Ways to Keep Workshop #1 – Hana van der Kolk, Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Troy, 2:30pm
In these public workshops we will do an accessible, physical warm up, learn and practice some modes for creating altars/arrangements with found objects on our own and together, explore simple songs and ways of improvising with sound as a group, and engage in movement-based practices that bring all of the elements of the workshop together. Through our collaborative work, we will awaken enchantment and become more intimate with ourselves, one another, and the energy of the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. These workshops are open to anyone and will be adaptable to all bodies. No previous dance or performance experience is necessary. You can take one of the workshops or both; they will be related to one another and different from one another. Wear layers of clothing that you are comfortable moving in and bring a notebook if you like (paper and pens also provided).
